Actually you can look them up for free online, however, the LG website is about as user friendly as a pack of wolves.

sweet medals! had a look and seems his service papers didnt survive! his military medal card is available at the national archives! cost you 2 pounds to down load but its nice to have since the papers didnt survive!

i find with the Gazzete if you put in the service number then sort by oldest that will get you the entry easy enough!

its a pdf so if you take a screen shot of it and adjust it in paint etc you can post it!or you can mail me and il post it for you! send me a pm if you would like me to! i THINK iv found your man on ancestry! (were you can check census etc) only one Gardiner Jackson Charlton on there!!

heres his military medal card!
im pretty sure that G.J.Charlton is Gardiner Jackson Charlton from Durham who was born in 1896 and died in 1940 as theres no other Gardiner Charlton coming! and his first regiment was the Yorkshire Regiment and Yorkshire isnt a million miles from Durham!!
