Was the use of New Zealand made BDs common amongst British troops ?

    Comment

Hi Steve, not unknown: See here:

      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...109582&page=35

But bear in mind this unit was shipped out to the Far East.

The Ox's and Bucks were deployed to Palestine, so use of the lighter weight NZ made BD could be possible. This is just guesswork on my part.

      Cheers, Ade.

Fairly common for units in the Middle East to have NZ. While building my collection I have noticed that units that served ME, N Africa, Italy, Greece etc usually have Commonwealth or War Aid, units in UK usually Brit, units in India /Burma mostly Indian, Australian/NZ but some British. I have had a couple of groupings to troops that served overseas (not NWE) and a lot of their other kit was Commonwealth as well, blanket, housewife, webbing etc

          Hi Steve
Sorry, I didn't realise you were refering to the label in the Oxf.& Bucks BD. The BD is British made, the West Auckland Clothing Co. being located at West Auckland, near Bishops Auckland, Durham.

Hi Steve, I would agree with all of Lee's observations.

BTW I have a denim blouse by that UK maker.

            Cheers, Ade.

Hi Lee ( and Ade ),
Yes, I was referring to the O&B BD. There must be a major error in the book "Uniforms of the WWII Tommy" by David B Gordon, because it features the West Auckland Co as a NZ maker ! It goes on to say that they are nearly identical to British made BDs . Maybe that's because they are British made !
              I love this forum

              Many thanks ,
              Steve

Hi Steve, David is a friend of mine, but his books do contain some errors.

                Cheers, Ade.

There are a lot of good books out there but many contain small errors or inaccuracies, on the whole they are very useful but no one can know everything. Thanks to the Forum we can all chat about things such as this and get more of the whole picture.

Seams we both had the same idea Steve, felt sure it was NZ made looked through the same reference book he states the only real difference is the lack of the word 1940 Patten on the label. I'll second that great forum as always..

It has been a great effort but I love Major Howard forces. I visit Pegasus bridge every year and also I have correspondence with some vet sons...it is a very special set for me.
