Canadian army winter cap, never issued overseas. Only used here in Canada. Not much value in those, nobody seems to want them. I see them for $15 around here and they sit.

Would you wear one? Even soldiers have a sense of style and that is just one uuugglyy hat! I would have thought they'd be rare because if they'd ever been issued widely they'd have been 'lost' in huge numbers, like other unpopular uniform items.

In 1940-45 I could see me wearing it if I were a Canadian Veteran's Guard watching over POWs in Timmins, Ontario - 200 miles north of anywhere and real brass monkey country! otherwise, I'd sooner freeze! Yuch!

          My tuppence worth. Sorry!

I forgot about Korea! Thanks, Paul.

It doesn't invalidate my thesis though, does it? Korea qualifies as brass monkey country with a vengence - the 'Frozen Chosen' [veterans of the Choison campaign] and all.

If I was a Veteran's Guard in Timmins in winter, 1945, I'd have worn a chicken on my head if it would have helped keep me warm. Helps the stylishness, or lack thereof, if you tie the ear flaps back up and put a badge on the front flap. Osprey Books' Canadian uniforms book has pics of this in use. Figures the officer's version is fur lined.

Since you mentioned the officers version, I have one of those also. Named to an officer at HQ Atlantic Command, which I thought was pretty cool. Follow the link to the pics from a old thread here.

Don't forget that the Army wasn't a Fashion Show.
Even I would wear it in a cold winter night.
