    British DP Combat Smock

Here's a British DP combat smock. Had this some time but always wondered about the colour of the DP.

Is it a colour for some specific role, for night use in desert? Anyone know about this type of smock?
    Cheers.

      Hello Steve,

This smock is just a standard issue British Army Desert DPM Smock that has had a dye run through it for some reason.

Clearly the dye has not taken to the velcro and label.

      Hope this helps,

      Mark.

Good point, dye/ toned down for civvy use maybe, not a bad idea. In fact I bought it to keep in the land rover for the days when it gets snowy/cold to use as an overcoat, the Lightweight Rover is not too warm!

Yes, all the tan strings, fittings etc look the right colour for desert and not affected by any dye. So the NSN is correct for a tan brown desert?

        Thanks for your help..

going through my files it's a
FSC 8415 - Clothing, Special Purpose
          country Code 99 UK
          665- 6285 Poncho, Combat.
          ?????
To me it doesn't look dyed as we tried this to get some Work clothing and even if the label and velcro didn't took the complete coulour, you'll see a difference and this is a clear white Label. I think it's something strange.
i have to clean up a bit, then I'll post another nice Jacket.

            Thanks Nico.

I don't know if this helps any determination or not but the hood has the wire support in it.

              Hi Steve ,
I also feel this item we "fashion" dyed to sell surplus military clothing to the public in a army surplus or a fashion retailer .
When dying military normal dyes do NOT take to any item with nylon in it such as velco ,zipps ect however a specialist dye house will be able to do this ...its really expensive and I suspect a smock weighs at least 3 and a half pounds ...you pay by weight so in USD would be around 10 bucks ,the smock in surplus land would have only cost that so cost is a big factor.
I feel the label has been re-applied , and then sold as an SAS , special forces item .

                Hi Owen,

                Thanks also for writing.

I won't have any concerns then with keeping it in the Rover, for the cold, in the mud off roading and so on. I thought I'd check, didn't want to ruin anything that might be something of a collector type item.

It can get cold in my Rover, or dirty sometimes like my friends SII!

I don't agree as I often work with such companies for movie Props and there are no spots of a removed and re attached label. To me the Fabric was dyed befor sewing in total. as it's a windproof smock, it is a SAS or SF Item. the wire is also found in the detachable hoods of the Standard Field Jackets.
sadly I lost my Aldershot contact to show the Pic, but I still think it's something special.

Hmm, OK rethink maybe just for cold weather not the mud then..

I've been looking about the web for the NSN of a regular desert DP in this pattern, I wondered if it had a different number.

                    Thanks Nico

                      Hello,

I am currently in my 23rd year of service with the British Army I have been issued many of these smocks over the years, this smock is not a UKSF specific item of clothing. Windproof items of clothing are issued dependent on environment not on what arm of service you belong to.

All the wire in the hood is for is to shape the "snorkel" of the hood around your face wether it be during a sand storm or a snow blizzard, as with the normal european pattern DPM.

I am back in camp tomorrow and I will make a point of visiting the clothing store and get them to run this NSN on their system to confirm, however I am 110% cerain this is nothing special it's just another standard issue Dezzy windproof.

                      Regards,

                      Mark.

From the JSP, designation is as on the label (except a mistake has been made in the JSP by the addition of the words PONCHO, COMBAT).

Prior to the issue of MTP these Smocks were the standard issue to ALL troops. It is possible that an individual soldier has coloured the smock, I know that a number of items were dyed in Afghanistan but with green.
