They are known as the "Lions of Ashoka" (he was an early ruler of India) and form part of the official emblem of the Indian Armed Forces. Immediately after Independence (1947) the lions were used to replace the British Crown on many badges. These could be the rank badges of a senior warrant officer or part of a larger device. I'll try to find out more.

As I thought: on the red backing they represent part of the rank tabs of a Lt General or General; plain they are part of the rank insignia of Cols, Lt Cols, Rissaldar Majors and so on. See this site for a complete list:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_ra...ignia_of_India
