I noticed in the film, that some of the SS soldiers had to SS shields on each side, I know this occured during the war, but did it occur that late on the helmets?

Two SS shields on "each" side?? Never heard of that...definitely fantasy.

Maybe I missed it in the previous posts, but in the 1st picture, didn't Reichs Heini have a Charlie Chaplin moustache like Adi?

          Hello Fritz,
In the movie Fegelein is wearing the correct Florian Geyer cuff title. When he falls down just after having been shot you can read "Florian..."

I checked the books I have concerning the Berlin battle, if there is a list then it says "Tiger heavy tank". It doesn't say if 1 or 2. I think that most of the Tigers in Berlin were 2s . So I guess that it was only a hand full of 1s....anyways, I always thought it was only 2s fighting there. Thanks for the info!!

          Simon,
I don't know if I remember that corectly but does "Fegelein" wear a "Adolf Hitler" cufftitle in that movia? If so, I am in doubt that this is correct???

          Cheers

I thought the biggest historical 'mistake' was not showing or referring to the brutality of the Russian advance.

I wouldn't have given it any thought and just assumed everybody knew about the realities of the Eastern front in WW2, but I was asked about it by somebody who didn't know about that aspect and once I thought about it, realized that indeed the film doesn't spell it out at any point.

Without that knowledge, you could be left wondering why the German troops and staff were so desperate and didn't just surrender and get on with their lives post-war rather than shoot themselves, especially since the Russians didn't seem that bad when they were shown in the final scenes.

A very good movie though, even if emotionally draining. One of the best movies about WW2 I've seen.

Hey Darryl, I don't think he meant "two on each side" but rather SS rune decals both sides. So double decal but both decals as rune decals.

Isn't one theory that those might be Eastern volunteers or such, which would make sense (at least to the film's advisors) as the final defenders of Berlin were volunteer units.

                      After the Battle

The magazine "After the Battle" has a nice article by Andrew Mollo about the making of the movie. It was filmed in St Petersburg. Most of the extras were Russian Soldiers. Mike

Guys, it was a movie, not a documentary or anything like that. I think they did an exceptional job all up. If the gear was perfect, you would all be whinging that the stuff would be sold on as original! Remember, we are in a VERY small part of the wider collecting community, not everyone is going to know the finest details of heraldic points. Yes, it is nice to display your knowlege of what is correct and what is not, but this soon turns to knit picking. Appreciate it for what it is, if you can do better, spend your collecting money on film production, better still, remake the film yourself! Then stand by for a whole new generation of detail picking!!!!

As for the tanks, the points have already been raised, there WERE Tiger 1's in Berlin, and good luck building a Tiger II anyway ! Also, if you can find enough original SdKfz251's to explode/ burn/ shell then be my guest, but offer one to me for sale when you have finished the loan to the film production company. What is wrong with using Czech vehicles? Visually from a film perspective, they are as close as you will get.

I think it was overall very good and bedsides, nobody is perfect! Just my opinion !

Well said Steve. And we should also remember that when you see other period pieces you probably have no idea what was right or wrong. If I saw a movie about Babe Ruth I'd have no idea if the uniforms were right or not!

Check out the Tiger Tank postcard that is depicted in this first Ebay link. Does anyone else think it looks very similar to the real picture posted by Hans N in Frame 7 on the first page of this thread? . Very interesting.

It looks very similar...I'd say the original pic was used as the basis for the artwork. well picked up!

Peter, thats the type of conclusion and comparison I drew my reply on.... If I watched Gladiator again, I still could not pick the helmet styles or the armour of the Roman infantry, but I'll bet the Roman experts were doing the same! Its a general market, not one designed for subject experts like some of the forum members. And by that I mean awards experts or historical fact experts, not having a go at anyone here!
