I played COD on your recommendation Peter but I must say I am a bit disappointed since I felt it was more of the same ( MOH) and a bit too short and fast. I wanted an opportunity to explore the environment look around instead of just running forward all the time. I finished the whole game very quickly. What I want is a WWII game like Farcry where you can swim drive vehicles explore anywhere you want to go and attack your enemy from any side you want hopefully COD2 will be like that. Do you know if this game will use the new physics engine processing card? I still think that H&D and H&D2 are the best ww2 games.

Call of Duty 2 promises to be less linear and add the things like flanking attacks, as well as vehicles. Here is the problem with non-linear gameplay...you have all this stuff that players might never see. While this works for an open-ended game like the Grand Theft Auto series, for a war game it doesn't make sense. And even you add all this "extra" stuff so you can flank, attack straight in or shoot it out you run into the development problem that all this has to be designed, programmed and coded. Games that try to be too ambitious usually result in something being left by the wayside and the fun factor suffers. Try Brothers in Arms. It allows for this flanking on a MUCH smaller scale.
My ultimate game would have vehicular control, destructible environments, multiplayer play with a reasonable/realistic objective against a challenging AI. Do I think we'll get there? Yeah, seriously I do but it is going to be about another 10-15 years. This would combine online multiplayer play with a robust campaign. We're just not there yet.

I played and did beat this COD Finest Hour.
It was a good game, it was pretty good, you can see Squadrons of Stukas, a whole unit of tigers/Panzers.
The only thing this games lacks is..... VOICES and Nazi flags.
While you are in the mission YOU wont hear ANY ANY voice of phrase in german. MOH has it. they YELL at you and start complaining about your attack.. that's what I like!! that's HOW germans were in WWII you also see this yelling and stuff in Band Of Brothers the movie.
As well as flags It think you will be able to see around 2 flags in the whole game. also you wont SEE any armband in any of the sentries or officers. you wont see any Iron cross or any badge in uniforms.
COD FH is NOT that great.
But I will recommend this game to any WWII fan. come one you wont waste time its a cool game and EXCELLENT GRAPHICS!!!!!!!
I love the last mission " The Rhine river " wow that background music of chorus you almost feel the german dispair.. haha..
I hope COD 2 to be better than his sucesor. more flags and that kind of stuff
Regards soldat.

I think what we need is a RTS game based on WWII sort of like a “what if scenario” . You could build your forces develop technologies, diplomacy etc. Imagine how cool it would be if you could make pacts with countries and that would give Germany time to develop super weapons or Russians the bomb. When at war you could control various units and make different decisions as to units and their position for eg. In Normandy.
I would also like to add on the COD topic that perhaps the problems developers have that you mention above are do to the fact that they want to waste resources developing their own game engines . Why can't the developers of COD2 license the Farcry engine, this would give them great gfx open environments and more time and money to develop the game and game play. A licensing fee for an engine must be far less than the cost of developing their own. In the end the game is going to sell a set number of copies regardless of who developed the engine.

To the point about game engines. You can license an engine but it has to be able to do the things you want to do. So I honestly don't think (and again I've covered this industry and seen the view from the inside) that you can just take any engine and convert it to your needs.
As far as multiplayer, I still have the highest hopes for Battlefield 2. From what I've seen of the game I think it could be very, very good.

I'm in my second round of BIA (playing at a harder level this time) and since my main interest is Normandy I have really enjoyed it. Pretty neat the way that the battlefield was recreated. Of course it isn't perfect but I have found it better than COD in the fact that the AI is better and you can flank and be a little creative in your gameplay.
Peter, since you brought up BF2 I must admit that the multiplayer in BF1942 is probably the best spent dollar that I've ever had in a video game. Personally, I enjoy the team aspect as well as the ability to control tanks, rifles, mgs and even jeeps.

For my money the best game out there where you can fly and aircraft with the complexity of a flight sim. Captain a destroyer, freighter or patrol craft. fight as infantry or jump from a player flown Ju52 as a fallschirmjäger. Crew a tank, assault gun, anti-tank gun, anti-aircraft gun that is as close to realistic as you can get and fire against targets which have correct armour thicknesses, weak points and properties is still World War Two Online.
Sure the graphics aren't the level of FPS games but then again it's a whole different genre. It has a strategic element in it with player run high commands deciding production goals in order to produce new equipment as well as strategic bombing to damage production facilities and slow the introduction of new vehicle types.
You really can't beat being with 20-30 guys in your squad, taking part in attacks or defences involving hundreds of players. Sure the game get's frustrating and can require a lot of patience if you're off into the countryside doing stuff like ressuply interdiction. But whereas i played Brothers in Arms for a total of about 8 hours, i've played WWIIOL for over 3 years.
The game is also being re-launched late April\May in the stores and will be called World War Two Online: Beyond Blitzkrieg.

Try this one on for size. Just do not try to compare it to MoH, CoD or BiA it's apples and oranges

I like the game because it's not based on hit points. It is based on actual damage models of the real weapons and armor
Hah I just read back and saw someone posted it already.. Good stuff !Last edited by Svt40; 03-29-2005, 09:31 PM.
