    that´s got to be...

    Catch 22
    Really superb.
Close second: Kramer's war, don't recall who wrote it, but it is a very readable book.

Other favourite books are the series by Sven Hassel, a guy from Denmark who ends up in an SS `Strafbatallion`.

      Nice eclectic selection so far.....!!

For fiction I'd chose The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, it's got everything I look for in a book. The Meeting at Telgete by the same author would run it a close second and I love anything by Evelyn Waugh, especially Scoop and the Sword of Honour trilogy.

Best ever book on war is Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger who fought right through the First World War for the Germans and was wounded dozens of times, a stunning read and re-issued last year in a fantastic new translation (just available in paperback too!!)

I would have to say the Aubrey / Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian. I have read the series thru five times and enjoyed them each time. They are a great read!

              Favorite Books

I would have to go with:

"The Forgotten Soldier" By Guy Sajer(WW2 German)
"Panzer Commander" By Hans Von Luck(WW2 German)
"A Tale of a Nervous Navigator" By John Iverach (WW2 Canadian)
"What If?" Collection of Authors(Alternate History Book)

I like personal histories and Historical accounts. Not that much into fiction but I do like Alternate History books because they really make you think.

Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi. Without question the best book I have ever read. An absolute must read. Read it.

As far as fiction goes, I really liked Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
                -Calvin Hall, repressed Appalachian American.

Desperately seeking a Juncker Knights Cross ribbon loop and well used Knights Cross ribbon!!!

He encountered one of his own officers, a huge Welshman named John Gwilliam who later captained his country's rugby team, 'carrying a small German soldier by the scruff of his neck, not unlike a cat with a mouse.' The Colonel said: 'Why not shoot him?' Gwilliam replied in his mighty Welsh voice: 'Oh no, sir. Much too small.'

At risk of sounding pretentious (but I really mean this)...the best book of all time happens to also be the best war book of all time:

                          The Iliad by Homer
