Again, an open mind about plot is needed to really enjoy the programme (this is from a man that loves Bond films).

Generation War is clearly made from the perspective of the five main characters so certain elements we know about Nazi Germany are not covered but I'd rather that than cramming all it into one short series.
Of the characters, again Friedhelm seems almost a modern day German pushed back into a different time rather than what I know and my opinion of that time. He was more credible in the second episode.

The uniform details are good and I haven't heard any outcries!

    Chris.
Chris I agree I think it was a really good mini-series, with a few historical inadequacies (ie MG42 in 1941?). A few things that stick out to me that I was surprised that they showed how brutal the Soviet soldiers were and that moment when Friedhelm was with the volks unit debating about surrendering because the Russians shot a lot of German POWs when they surrendered even this late in the war. I do know that Poles were very anti-Semitic but it shocked me that they showed this on film.

Overall I would have to give this film a 8/10, but it does require an open mind. It is not as detailed as "Downfall."

just to add a little balance!, i thought it wasn`t especially well done to be honest. i know that watching something like this requires a "suspension of disbelief", but, some of the coincidences were taking things too far for me. the friends continually bumping into one another on a front of a thousand miles with millions of combatants!, the jewish nurse coming back as an officer, viktor stumbling into friedhelm three times in a couple of days whilst with the partisans etc etc. and the final scene where they all walk into a berlin bar within 90 seconds of each other on the same day!!. naaah!!

it was `ok` i thought, nothing more. could have been much much better but for the writing , wouldn`t bother watching it again though.

Saw it on TV here in Belgium. Not a bad series. And at least much more realistic as the horrible things produced in the US.

One has to realize that it is a movie, making a good movie is art in itself so it´s the freedom of art just like writing a book based on historically correct events.
How should they be able to keep the leading characters connected otherwise?

"How should they be able to keep the leading characters connected otherwise?"

i understand this, but surely a major part of the horror of war is the very seperation and the unknown. to have the major characters continously `bumping` in to one another was just too much for me i`m afraid!.

i`m not decrying it for the hell of it, just my honest opinion, nothing more. the more series` made about the ostfront the better. but not every offering can be up to the standard of `band of brothers`.

Wow..Band of Brothers did not even made it to let an MG 42 sound like one..nobody is perfect.

                Chris.

I have not seen it yet, but this is bound to be a valid point because all historical movies/T.V. dramas (either good or bad and either technically authentic or poetically authentic) are really a reflection of the times they are written/made.

                  Hi,

This was a TV drama, not a documentary.
It was meant to entertain, and a certain level of "suspension of disbelief" is at times required.
It entertained me, and my UK DVD issue is in the post!
                  At last, hurrah!

                  Best wishes,

                  John.
