New book in September - "Autumn Gale"

I came across this by chance, looks to be a massive work and an extremely interesting topic

    From the site

"We are proud to announce the publication of our latest book, 'Autumn Gale (Herbststurm)', schwere Heeres Panzerjäger-Abteilung 559, Kampfgruppe Chill and the German recovery in the autumn of 1944. Text is by Jack Didden, lay-out and illustrations are by Maarten Swarts.

The title is rather a mouthful, but then so is the book. At a 550-pages (full-colour) it is a truly momentous study based on Allied, German and Dutch records, many of which have never been looked into before. It paints a vivid picture of how a small battle group slowed the Allied momentum at a crucial stage of the war. After the collapse of the German front in France the end of the war in Europe seemed within grasp, but the German recovery, dashed the Allied hopes. The story really begins with the capture of Antwerp on 4 September 1944 and then goes on to describe in full detail the various engagements in Northern Belgium (Merksem, Beringen, Hechtel, Geel, Ten Aard), the capture of Joe's Bridge, operation Market Garden (focusing on Hell's Highway), including the armoured battles near Son and Veghel. Next the battles for Breda, Bergen op Zoom and 's-Hertogenbosch are discussed, including the armoured engagements that took place near Wuustwezel, Roosendaal and Raamsdonk, until the final withdrawal of the 15. Armee behind the river Maas in early November."

"The great majority of the photographs (more than 800!) has never been published before and the maps are based on the original wartime ordnance survey maps, again in full-colour"

Appeared promising at first but the graphic designer obviously had a stroke of insanity and committed the worst sin a book designer can commit: ragged-right. Intolerable.

Possibly the right edge of the pages are ragged edged and not cut straight like most books are presenting a rough rather than smooth face when completely closed???? Just guessing.....best, rich

I think he's actually really referring to way in which the text has been formatted, where the right edge of each block of text is jagged. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of the style of design used in the book but would hardly say it's an affront to my senses.
At the end of the day, it's the information included rather than any great preference for how it's presented.

ErichK, there are usually two ways how text columns in a book are arranged. One is the hundreds of years old standard style known as fully-justified, the other is a relatively recent left-justified aka ragged-right. In a fully-justified design both the left and the right margins of the text block are even, i.e. every line has the same width. In a left-justified design only the left margin is even while the margin is not (=line width varies), hence the name ragged-right. I find the latter most distracting while reading as my eyes are looking for text where it should be but is not. In addition, it looks very untidy. The degree of untidiness depends on how much the line length varies; in some texts it varies so much that it becomes unreadable. On a closer look, Autumn Gale is not a worst example.

                E.g. Yerger's DKiG series has fully-justified text.

                  book autumn gale

I dont visit this forum every day so I was struck today by the insulting nonsense
I read in the post above. "Stroke of insanity, intolerable, worst sin" are the words Mr. Juukinen uses when describing a fully normal text style used in innumerable books and that most people wont even notice.
We worked 10 years on this book, researched every archive, every document, discussed with local historians and vistited all the spots. The result is a book full of new information.
Of course this is nothing for Mr. Jukka Juutinen, for the text is left justified (not ragged!). If you dont like that style I would say ok,dont buy the book, but thats obviously not enough.
The question is why did he send this message? Warn the world for left justified text?
That s unnecessary for everyone can see the sample pages on the site and can see what he gets. Besides a great part of the print run is already sold, so not many people are having trouble with the text style. And more than that, the book looks good and is perfect readable, we even used a typeface specially designed for books, (a Finnish -sic- design).
I wont react further on this useless theme. Everyone who wants to know more about the book can send me a PM.

Mr. Swarts, the reason why I posted the message is this is a forum for people to post their opinions on books dealing with topics relevant to this forum. And my opinion is that fully-justified is the best for all printed material.
