    DAK referene books

    Hey Guys,

As I already mentionned in the Wehrmacht equipment part, I'm planning to collect DAK in the future.
But for that I need good reference books.
I you guys know a few good books about uniforms or other parts, I gladly hear it.
    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Yannick

    Yannick,

well brother its a spendy field to collect and your up against some stiff competition on this forum for good pieces. But books I would recommend: Afrikakorps self portrait by Dal McGuirk, Rommel's Army in Afrika by Dal McGuirk (essential must), Rommel's Afrikakorps (Personal groupings, award documents and ephemera) and Afrikakorps by Robert Kurtz, Uniforms, Organization and history of hte Afrikakorps by Roger James Bender and Richard D. Law and there are many other great books out there on the subject . There are some very experienced collectors on this forum that have killer DAK and tropical collections (John H (luft guy), Mark G, NZMARK, 90th light, Greg B, OSS to name only a very few) and we are also quite fortunate to have Tim O on here who is really into the MTOE and breakdown of what units were in the DAK as well as many many other collectors who are very knowledgeable about the subject. Said people above are not an all inclusive list but they have a ton of experience and I suggest you start using the search function and looking up threads on the the subject. There is also a killer thread in the collections part of the forum dedicated to the DAK and Tropical militaria as well. Best of luck and always happy to help. Matt

      Hi Yannick

Welcome to the Forum, and good luck with your DAK collecting. There are many great guys here that will help you.

Very well stated Matt & thanks. Would also suggest J.R. Figueroa's work's, "Tropical Uniforms of the German Army and Airforce in WWII" vol 1 & "Tropical Headgear of the German Wehrmacht in WW II" vol 2 Though dated, still are very valuable today....

      Thanks Jose

Mark (msteve) is another guy with a killer tropical collection as well and I think a lot of the trop guys are pretty willing to help. The books mentioned by Tim are also excellent and really all the books out there mentioned by other members here as well. I think I own everyone of them but you can never have too many solid refrence books in an area that you really enjoy. I have almost a whole shelf dedicated to my tropical books. If your into Paras in Afrika John H has a great book on the subject (don't have that one....)

But best of luck man, again its spendy and stiff competition and I had to dive into other waters because I couldn't compete with these hard core guys and my interests have gone more PzGrn in recent years but I still hoard up tropical items when I can and help the guys in need. I seem to be able to find loose insignia better than the devil himself but I also pay better than most so it works out well for everyone.

We are here to help and be patient for items and advice. I think the vast majority of us have jobs and are not on the WAF all day and we have families and what not. Don't just impulse buy something, ask around and don't hesitate to post pics. There is no dumb question other than the one you don't ask and not asking questions can cost you a ton of money in this field quickly. When your staring down the barrel of a 2-3000 base tropical tunic you want to be sure that its right and we are all willing to help a guy out. We may get a bit jelous at times but at the end of the day its a small community for true DAK stuff and a larger community for guys who collect Tropical militaria. Matt

              To all,

Thanks for the advice and good recommendations for the books.

              afrikasandman,

First of all, thanks for the good advice, information about books and telling about the other DAK/ tropical collectors.
As you said, it's spendy and you need a lot of knowledge and help.
I look daily to this forum and other internet sites for useful information.
I've already seen a few threads (also the any DAK items thread ), and I still have a lot to go.
I'm aware of the big costs it will take, but I certainly prefer to spend money to militaria than other (not necessary things).
Of course I'll have to be very patient, but thats also exciting so I've no problem with that.
When I've questions or doubts about something, I'll surely let it know to you guys.
I'm not going to do impulsive purchases, before I buy something I'll ask you guys what's your opinion, etc.
Certainly in the beginning because I haven't any experience.
I still have a long way to go, but I see it like an adventure where I can learn new things and ad a special aspect to my collection.

              Again, thanks guys.
              Yannick
