Gentlemen this crazy price is definitely a mistake by the Amazon computer in the USA and will be corrected shortly. So take advantage of their stupidity before they correct the pricing error. I've already notified them and it's just a matter of time before the correct price of $85.00 is set back again.

The same thing happened when I preorderd The double volume Knights Cross with Oakleaves books from Schiffer, by Dixon, at Amazon. The list price is 125, and I ordered it for 80. Of course it is out of stock, and now they are selling it for 118. I have emailed them enough times harassing them, so now they said they will send me the books at the 80 dollar price.

I took advantage of the deal! I had credit from my Amazon Visa card reward points, so it made for a VERY nice price. The book hasn't shipped yet, but I'll be patient.

Just out of curiosity, does this take money out of the pockets of the authors?

That should depend on the contract?

i was under the impression that amazon already owns all the books that it sells.

I always thought that large retailers like amazon buy a large number of these books from the publishers at discount, then sell them at or near list price in order to make a profit. So if this is the case RZM already received the money the charged from amazon. I believe this is how it is done, but maybe I'm wrong...

I have the same understanding as Klaus, and judging by Remy's response above I'm guessing RZM are more than happy to sell another shipment to them.
Also noticed that they haven't changed the price yet either.

I generally try and avoid buying books from Amazon because they take so little care in packaging their books, particularly when ordering 2 or more at a time, but when the price difference is so great it's hard to resist.

Either way, I'm really looking forward to adding this book to my library and hopefully plenty of people took advantage of the price.

Amazon get a 55% discount and free shipping from the publisher. Demand determines how many books they order. Generally they start small, but if those sell, they will double the quantity in the next order, and so on. There is some sort of automatic formula. They try to anticipate future sales and have stocks on hand.

Payments are made a month after the end of the preceding month (April sales will be paid at the end of May). The amount the publisher receives is normally determined by the list price. I'll be very interested to see if Amazon give Remy the correct amount, or a cut of their mistakenly lower price.

Remy, any word from Amazon on this?
