Anybody knows if Napola is available with english audio or subs? Is it good? On Ebay is listed also as "movie of gay interest" !

I wasn't much impressed by The Bridge Over the River Kwai , I also visited by chance (i was headed to other hidden treasures less touristic) the Kanchanaburee area and Hellfire pass, and that was more interesting.
But i have to say that when I was a child (i'm in my late 30's) one of my brit relatives brought me a 7" with the famous march from the movie and it stuck in my head since then, even before I actually watched it!

The copy of Napola I have has German audio. English subtitiles are an option. I suppose it might have gay interest because it features young men at military school. But then again any war/miltary movie could be said to have gay interest if you stretch the definition because they all feature lots of men. IMHO Napola is must see.

          Hi Jens,

I didn't know about the 10 option limit for polls. Thanks for explaining.

I have never seen Napola, but considering the positive reviews I've read here, I will certainly need to add it to my library.

              Oldie but Goodie

I know it has already been mentioned, but I just watched "Battle of the Bulge" on DVD & highly recommend it. Not accurate completely militarily perhaps, but Robert Shaw gives a bravura performance at Col. Hessler of the Panzer Division. Also, as mentioned contains the great sequence near the beginning where the raw recruits sing the Panzerlied, and he joins in.

"Mr. Robert's" is a classic too.
It is a brillant movie , one which will never date Jimmy Cagney as the petty tyrant , chip on the shoulder , overlooked "Captain" , Jack Lemon and Henry Fonda.
I just loved the time the Ships doctor was called to see "the Captain" ...the slow walk ..."maybe he will be dead when I get there" , always a joy to see it.
I must see if it can be had on DVD.

I know I said SPR but I just watched the Longest Day and it is amazing in terms of the fact that it is huge. It should have been about three hours loger though. I would have watched it, it ended to soon. Its a great movie but you cant sum up the whole story of D-Day is 3 hours.

The four that I currently favor are Sahara with Humphrey Bogart, The Devils Brigade, Platoon, and A Bridge too Far.

                          favorite war film

When it comes down to it, my all time favorite is Glory.

The part where the 54th Mass. is marching out to the beach, flanked by their cheering comrades in arms is pure magic.

I recently watched a movie on the Nuremburg Trials starring Alec Baldwin. I dont know the name of it as I got to it about 5 mins in channel surfing. Not really a "war" movie but an excellent movie I thought.

Here are some of my favorites, mostly about the Pacific Theater. “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” starring David Bowie, “Japan’s Longest Day” starring Toshiro Mifune, “Fire in the Plain”, “Tora! Tora! Tora!”, “Under the Flag of the Rising Sun”, “None but the Brave” starring Frank Sinatra, “The Bridge”, ”Das Boot” and “Come and See”.
Ok, some of these films aren’t real true action films but still great movies to watch.
“Tora! Tora! Tora!” filmed here, I remember watching Zeros, Kates and Vals flying over our elementary school (so long ago). The neat part about “Tora!” was that my mother lived through the real event of ‘41, I got to see them filming in the ‘70’s (as a young kid), and my daughter, even though very young at the time of “Pearl Harbor” in 2000. Every time we would drive past Pearl City, I would point out the planes over Pearl Harbor to her (which she had no interest at all!). If I’m not mistaken, in the movie “Pearl”, they used some green painted Zeros, I thought Zeros especially those used in the attack on December 7th were painted sky grey (off-white) overall.
“Flags of our Father” and “Letters of Iwo Jima” was all right but a little disappointing. The CGI in the movie was a little too much, especially with the transport ships and warships around Iwo (they also over did it in “Pearl Harbor” with the Japanese planes too). Some how “Letters” reminded me of “Last Samurai” but still a lot better then “Windtalkers”.
Those are my favorite movies. Of the ones on the poll, “Das Boot” would be my top choice, then “Die Brucke”, “Saving Private Ryan” and “Stalingrad”. I would like to have seen “Battle of Britain” and “Come and See” but I guess that would be under “others”.
                              Aloha,
                              Rodney
