"Die Brucke" 2008 remake
Hello all,
Many apologies, I seem to have got my information wrong!?
I have never read the original book, but only a review on some film website about the original film.
In the review it was stated that the 'film is based on a true story of young conscripts in the Waffen SS Panzer Division "Gotz von Berlichen". and I just took this as a true statement of fact without checking further.

The book was written by Manfred Gregor ten years after the war. He was a 16 year old who was called up in the last draft. It never mentions his unit name as far as I recall but they refer to the officers as 'Herr' which would indicate they were not in a Waffen SS unit. The action at the bridge occured on May 1 so they got killed only several days before the end of the war. It is well worth reading as he has a good eye for some of the details you don't often hear about.Comment

I have a copy of the original film and have watched it many times over the years. I would like to point out that the war was still fresh in the minds of the Germans at that time and much of the equipment and uniforms were original from the TR period although the US Tank leaves much to be desired in that film. I saw the remake on Dutch TV recently and it has quite few differences from the original film but at least the US tanks were original and more believable but overall it cannot beat the original.Comment

Just watched the movie last night after not having seen it for 25 odd years.. And I discovered something I did not know, the Knights Cross officer fleeing with the rest on trucks, Til Kiwe, was in actual fact a KC recipient with the Afrika Korps. His real name was Eduard Kiever, played in many war movies like The longest Day or the Great Escape..
