Hi,

Why does no one mention the brilliant Russian movie "Come And See" anymore?
It seems to be a film which polarises everyone's opinion!
People seem to either love or hate this picture.

I think any film that doesn't portray the Wehrmacht soldiers as a bunch of bumbling, incompetent almost comical clowns waiting to be mowed down in droves would get my vote!

Honestly, things like where eagles dare, the dirty dozen, the dirty dozen: the next mission, the dirty dozen: the deadly mission, the dirty dozen: the fatal mission and the original "Inglorious Bastards" from 1977 are bordering on comedy, the Germans are portrayed as absolute imbeciles who can barely shoot straight! And die in incredible numbers fighting the most unlikely "heroes"

Bridge Over the River Kwai and Zulu.

Vets hate "Bridge Over the River Kwai" with a passion. Hollywood took even more liberties with history than usual in this movie for dramatic effect.

First off, the name of the river is not even pronounced correctly -- it should be Kway (rhymes with hay). Second, the bridge was made of iron and is actually still standing. Third, there was no contest of wills between a British and Japanese officer that bordered on collaboration. It was a horrible experience for all allied soldiers involved. All of the main characters are fiction.

While it may be an enjoyable movie on many levels, the fact that they used a real place and time and totally mangled the history irks a lot of people that were involved in the reality. Far too many people learn history from movies. All they had to do was mangle the name a bit more and change the location a few miles, and no one would care.

I think a good example of a movie that gets most of the history right while still telling a good story is The Great Escape. The Steve McQueen character is total fiction just to bring in American audiences (we have since gotten more used to foreigners in our movies), but the important facts are all there down to the way they distributed the dirt in the gardens.

Yes, I'm well aware that movie is fiction but still a good story line and portrays the hardships of being a POW under Japanese rule. Just a classic w/good acting and entertaining.

36 Hours is not a big movie, but is enjoyable. It shows up on TCM here in the states every now and then and is on Netflix. It is an early Mission Impossible type of spy movie. I've always been a sucker for the elaborate mind-games stories.

It also has John Banner before he became Sergeant Schultz in Hogan's Heroes.
