    The Germans did have such a drop fuel tank already......but didn't use it, being afraid that the British would do the same after seeing/finding/hearing about the German tank.

      Do you mean U 156 ? not around the same time but September 16 1942, and that wasn't in the Med., and the attacking aircraft was an American B-24 bomber. The so called "Laconia" order by Dönitz was the result of that attack.
