    George Nipe, author of "Last Victory in Russia" and "Decision in the Ukraine", has written a revealing and unprecedented re-analysis of the II.SS-Panzer-Korps’ operations during the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943. Unlike all previous books on the subject, which refer almost exclusively to Russian accounts of the battle, "Blood, Steel and Myth" makes extensive use of original German source material. In so doing he convincingly exposes the conventional wisdom, which through its constant repetition over the years has assumed mythic status, as being fundamentally flawed and patently untrue.

    Based principally on Heer and Waffen-SS combat and intelligence reports from the southern sector of the Kursk salient, as well as the individual accounts of veterans, the book covers in detail the daily progress of Operation Citadel. With meticulous attention to detail the author illustrates the unfavorable circumstances and erroneous command decisions which doomed Germany’s last major offensive in Russia irrevocably to failure.

    The personal notes, conversations and official orders of generals Hausser, Hoth, and Manstein are all closely scrutinized to shed new light on this much celebrated but incorrectly recounted clash of arms, with particular attention being paid to the “greatest tank battle in history” at Prochorovka. With "Blood, Steel and Myth" George Nipe sets the record straight with all the conviction of an Eastern Front historian whose veracity and impeccable scholarship have been proven time and again.

        I have read "Decision in the Ukraine" it was akin to root canal treatment, slow and bloody awful.

          An accurate historian, not a "photo book on Tiger tank seats vol. 3" or "we trudged through the blood soaked soil to kill the Bolshevik hordes" type story author.

          Considering how much his books sell and his rep as a historian, most seem to disagree with you (including me).

          But to each their own of course.

          I've been chomping at the bits for this new one since his past books correct mistakes copied for years by others since he is using original records.

            I thought "Decision in the Ukraine" was a great book and I'm very much looking forward to George Nipe's latest.

            I always hope he is the researcher/historian that will one day bring out a book on the battles of the 4th SS Pz Korp fighting outside Warsaw in 1944.

              Speaking for myself, I found Nipe's "Decision in the Ukraine" to be excellent and illustrated an operation of which little had been published. As an aside, I have a tunic of a W-SS Das Reich officer who fell in the fighting at the Mius on 1 August 1943.

              I also share Pimberg's hopes about the 4th SS Pz Korps at Warsaw (and elsewhere) as well!

              So - another book for the shelf...

                  Nipe's "Last Victory in Russia: The SS-Panzerkorps and Manstein's Kharkov Counteroffensive - February-March 1943" is an excellent book. So I am expecting good things from this one.

                      His Kharkov book was more than pretty good , this new look on "Citadel" I will try and get in due course.
                      Mark makes a good point often repeated erros a re taken for histroy without checking.

                        I too am looking forward to this and will get a copy. I really enjoyed an article I read awhile back by him(Nipe) that explained alot of detailed info on this battle(in southern sector), and am looking forward to the book. Also, while doing a search, I found this little tid bit...kinda interesting the time frame of these coming out. might make for some good comparison reading...

                            Not to dismiss Nipe, but one military background reviewer (Rob Forczyk) on amazon.com does criticize Nipe´s Kharkov book for basically total omission of intelligence and logistic aspects of the operation...
