Antiques Roadshow shown 20/12/2009: POW at Dunkirk

    Friends,

There is an interesting piece that was shown on last nights on the UK programme "Antiques Roadshow"

It was a scrapbook that a British Solider created about his time as a POW after being captured at Dunkirk.

This chap tried to escape from the POW camp with a German Uniform that he had made himself. The breast eagle is shown during the piece and not being a uniform\insignia guy I wondered how close it was to the real thing?

    It's on the iplayer here:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...32_Abbotsford/

    and starts around 41:10.

Would be interested to hear your comments.

    Regards

    Ian

    I saw this

and thought it looked very good. I wondered if he had the story wrong and it was one his dad used as a pattern, to copy the fakes from. It looked very good, with what looked like the right sort of backing strip, but it was only on screen briefly and I can't watch the re-run in the Nederlands.
So not really helpful to you, but a very interesting story.

Thanks for the response Jerry. I've captured the frame that shows it.

I've looked at this the right way up, and IMO it's a copy ( I think it has too many segments on the inner curving wing feathers, cant quite see clearly), as they said on the telly, but it is so well done, it is very convincing and at a glance would fool anyone. Mind you, someone else might offer a different opinion. Hats off to the guy, he so nearly escaped.

          Doh!

I've had a second look and liased with Fred G and I'll return to my original opinion, that it's an original example, probably used as a pattern to make copies of, or just a souveneer. A better picture would totally clarify this, as I would like to believe the story.

Unfortunately that's about the best shot I can get, as you know it wasn't on the screen for too long!

Thanks again I appreciate yours and Fred G's time

            Cheers
