You left out one of my favorite sub movies!!! "The Enemy Below". A great film about a WWII German U-boat vs. a US Navy Destroyer. A must see!
You also forgot many classics suc as: "Bridge at Remagen", "The Eagle Has Landed", "Where Eagles Dare", and "Kelly's Heros".
You also left out many of the great newer films such as: "Saving Private Ryan", "Enemy at the Gates", "Letters From Iwo Jima", "The Thin Red Line", "Flags of Our Fathers", "Band of Brothers", and of course the newest one, "Valkyrie".
Daniel Craig has a new WWII movie coming out too. I can't remember the title though? I think he is a Russian or Polish resistance fighter on the Eastern Front. Looks good!
This is a great question, but for me, there is really too many movies to chose from. I think my favorite is probably "Band of Brothers", but that's not really a movie, more like a mini-series.
I like "Kelley's Heros" because it's more of a comedy movie. I like "Das Boot", and "The Enemy Below" as my favorite sub movies. "Midway" is one of the best movies about carrier battles, and is loaded with big time actors!
I think for an all time favorite though, I'd have to go with one of the newer films. I really liked "Letters From Iwo Jima". I liked how it showed both sides of the war, and was very accurate, and powerful. I also liked, "Enemy at the Gates" (without the love sceen!)
Yet, I remember when "Saving Private Ryan" first came out. I went to see it, and I remember it was the first movie I ever saw when everyone lef the theater in complete and total silence. Many vets where there, and were crying as well! It really hit people hard. Great film.
I think one thing we can all agree on though,... Is that "Pearl Harbor" sucked!

"The Great Escape".....over a dozen major characters, ALL explored, GREAT cinematography, acting, etc.
I find VERY few faults with it....
"Band of Brothers", is my runner-up, for most of the same reasons, along with "All Quiet on the Western Front"I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.....

Here is 2 great foreign films that is not on the 'common list'.
"Der Untergang" or "Downfall" (2004), it was an Academy Award Nominee
for best Foreign Language film. Bruno Ganz is absolutely scary as a dead-
ringer for Adolf Hitler !!! One scene where a SS Doctor pulls the igniters on
2 egg-grenades under the table, to blow up his whole family---yipes !!!
Another is "Dark Blue World"(2002).
From Director and producer of Academy-award winning movie 'Koyla'.
About Czech fighter pilots flying for RAF. Great movie with good flying
scenes in Spitfires.
Both of these are nice foreign additions to the war-film library. Of course
all of the above mentioned DVD are in my collection. But my fav is
"Saving Private Ryan"...

Growing up, I watched Midway about a thousand times, but my current top five are.
Downfall
Letters from Iwo Jima
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers
The Thin Red Line
I wouldn't put them in any particular order because each has it's own great merits. For example, SPR hits you in the chest like no other film. Seriously, I'm a little desensitized to it now, but when I first saw it, man, like wow.
In contrast, the Thin Red Line needed to ferment for a while. The first time watching, I fell asleep, but it keeps getting better and better each time I watch it. The characters are just so interesting, especially a poetic Nick Nolte.
Band of Brothers can't be left out, just because it's a no kidding tribute to some real people. Done to the standards of SPR, but with more development.
Downfall, while not as emotion as some of the others is truly captivating, extremely well done insight into the final collapse.
And lastly, Letters. This film is somehow different from all the rest and can speak to both pacifists plight and patriotic zeal. It does this complex dance with grace, especially for a gruesome war movie, and is really unique in my book. It's a masterpiece.
Now, all that aside, there are just some times where all this new stuff won't do, and you just have to watch a little Von Ryan's Express of The Great Escape.
