Not sure I agree with that comment about the quality of the people interviewed, because one of the benefits of it being made 40 years ago was that many interesting characters were still alive.
Try making a documentary today with Otto Remer (my favourite interviewee in that series), Adoph Galland and Albert Speer on camera !

I would say that what it lacks by way of production standards ( as it might be made today) , it makes up for in terms of the quality of the people interviewed.
The great strength of the series is the number of key people interviewed.
Donitz, Kretchmer, Cremer, Galland,Speer, remer - you can still see the personality of the man , rigid and unquestioning.
Haris, Spatz, Horrocks, all remarkable people to hear speak.
