It is most surely one of the best series. I finally broke down and found it at Borders for a fairly reasonable price (65.00) for the complete set. It is good for sure.

In my opinion this series (although a little dated by todays production standards) remains the yardstick in reporting the events of WWII.
Many have tried since it's original release however, all have failed.
After owning the series on VHS for an eternity, I have finally purcchased the DVD box-set and it is worth every penny. (Amazon.uk have it for £36)

I ordered the DVD box set for $60.00 from the History Channel Online Store on Feb 8 and i have still not received it.God, they are slow.
As is said before i am looking forward to seeing the series again.The narration by Sir Laurence Olivier is something that really stands out in my memory from watching it when i was a kid in England.

It is quite decent but not too objective. E.g. the Soviets get far too positive review in comparison to Germans who get vilified at every possible opportunity. It is also too British centric. Very little on Pacific naval combat or Northern European TO.Comment

The best WWII documetary ever ! ! !
Still remember the first time back in 1972 when it was first showed here in Puerto Rico. I was just a kid [12 years] with some vague idea about WWII. My father was very disappointment when it was show in spanish [a good translation by the way] because he knew very well who was Laurence olivier. No VCR on those days so I recorded all chapters on germany and later recalled from memory everytime I play it back [not quite accurate but for a kid the images in my mind were great].
Later on I grew up, came up with a profession that allow me to get the VCR and later the DVD version. And then the crazy idea spending thousands in some stuff were most people get impressed [not in a very positive way] when they find out about this special hobby that I have. But at least they all know that my interest is only in military history and not on those schizoid nazis...Comment

Interesting
It's an interesting overview realising that in the 1970's the "ultra" code information was still classified, and how the documentry makers used the "knowledge of the day" to view events with the contemporary beliefs.
..With this in mind, while watching certain episodes e.g. the one on "D-Day", it really shows up the fact of what still is to be explained on the release of further WW2 "classified" files !

It is now getting another showing in the Uk via "Sky".
The series is perhaps dated in terms of production values , it is approaching 40 years of age but what it lacks by present day standards is the quality of the people interviewed.
I don't really agree that it vilified the Germans at every opportunity - having recently seen the programme on the Atlantic - it gives very fair coverage to the Germans and I found this to be typical of the series.
One line which struck me was in one of the last of the series dealing with the end of the war in Europe - " A Defeated Army is not always a beaten one"- how the German Army was described - I thought that this was a fair comment.
Earlier epsiodes did centre very much on the West but given the series as a whole it is a job well done.
A benchmark for others to follow - absolutely and so far they have failed to match the "World at War".
Another enduring documentery - "Battleship Bismarck" (BBC) which dates from 1970/71.Comment

I agree and as yet IMO there has not been one to equal it, a lot of documentaries today while better produced lack the quality of the interviewees from the period and i do find it rather irritating that a lot of the modern documentary use battle re-enacters to re-enact scenario'sOriginally posted by stgeorge64 View PostComment

Well guys, I gotta tell ya.....I am soooo glad that I bought this series and have it at home for my viewing pleasure.
I have watched the first 8 series. I don't remember having ever seen anything that equals this series. The footage and interviews are unequaled. Unbelievable to be able to listen to Speer and Adm Donitz speak of the war in their own words. I don't see any political slanting for the Soviets or against Germany, just the painful truth. With my limited time, I have had to put down two books I want to read, Battlefield Berlin and The Berkut.
If you want some great WWII TV at a small price, I highly recommend World at War!!
Don't have a favorite.....yet..
Tomorrow, disc 4, Whirlwind: bombing Germany September 1939 - April 1944, can't wait
