I remember watching 'World at War" when i was a kid, and that was probably the first time the Holocaust was brought to my attention. Knowing that these terrible events occurred while my dad and mom were still alive brought home the reality that there was a big world out there, and not always so nice.
I think I was obsessed with WWII from then on....

Looking forward to Ken Burns' series, too!

      Thanks Bob!

In addition to all the great opinions and other documentaries I've learned about here, one of the best is hearing about a new one premiering in a couple of weeks. I didn't even know about that one, and I surely would have missed it, had you not mentioned it here.

      Thanks,

I personally like "The Lost Evidence" documentaries. They cover only specific battles, but it's incredibly well done in my opinion. A simple search for "The Lost Evidence" on youtube should yield some great results.

          K98 man,

I'll be sure to search for those "Lost Evidence" documentaries too. The title alone is intriging enough for me.

Just a little correction, The World at War was actually a Thames Television series for ITV, not the BBC.

For me too it's at the top of the list. The intro music is amongst the oldest memories i have, i saw it or parts of it aged 3 or 4 believe it or not and it was instrumental in sparking my life long interest in military history.

WWII in colour is also very good indeed.

The World at War is simply a landmark piece of television.

The new Ken Burns series (from the trailers i have seen) appears to be very, very US-centric in its approach...does that hold true for those that have had a preview of the first episodes?

Yes, I agree with you about the music theme for The World at War. The music alone creates it's own powerful memories for me too. I also never get tired of hearing it at the beginning and end of every episode. It is a truly haunting and fitting theme for the epic of all documentaries.

                  Chris

P.S. I have not seen WWII in color, but I recently came very close to buying it. I'll have to get it soon now, especially since you have recommended it.

                    World at War

                    Hello,
I feel World at War is by far the best. I bought my DVD set at COSTCO for $49.95.

Another series I liked was from 1978 and it was narrated by Burt Lancaster and was on the Eastern Front, it was called the Unknown War. http://unknown-war.com/

One of the worst was GI Diary (narration by Loyd Bridges), do you remember that one?

                    Regards,
                    Jody

Wow Jody! You got a seriously good deal on your World at War set! I paid $90.00 plus tax at Barnes and Noble, and that was with a 10% discount. Oh well, I admit I didn't do any shopping around. Once I saw it there by chance, I was so anxious to get it that I just moved on impulse and bought it. Yes, sometimes impulses are expensive, but at least I impulsed on something that's worth it. I've already watched some of the episodes twice, and each time I seem to see or hear something I hadn't noticed in the previous veiwing. So, I guess you might say that, even at my higher cost, I'm still getting my money's worth.

                      Chris

P.S. I'll be sure to look for the Unknown War too. I hadn't even heard of that one, so thanks for the tip! As for the G.I. Diary, I hadn't heard of that one either, but from what you say, I suppose it doesn't matter.

I agree with most of the choices. World At War and The Unknown War are right up there.

There was another series back in the 70's called "The War Years". I believe it was originally a French production, dubbed into English. Anyone remember that one?

Never heard of The War Years either. I can't believe how many documentaries are out there that I've never even heard of. Since I speak French pretty well too, I might even be able to skip the subtitles on that one.

This one came out in the 70's I believe. It's been repeated through the years. I have the entire series taped off TV (about a dozen episodes if I remember correctly).

Correct....I've seen the first two, and it IS an American viewpoint. Don't know what the subsequent installments have in store....
