    Best WWII Documentary?

I love documentaries about WWII, and I was just wondering if there are any great ones left out there that I haven't seen yet?

I just finished watching the famous, completely-comprehensive BBC produced The World at War. In my opinion, of everything I have so far seen, this is, hands down, the best thing that's ever been produced by a landslide. I don't think that anything was overlooked in this one. Plus, one of the greatest things about it is that it was produced in the mid-seventies, when a lot of the actual people involved were still alive, such as Albert Speer, Karl Wolf, etc.? It seems that anything produced much later couldn't be better, just due to the lack of interview opportunities.

So, what are your favorite WWII documentaries?

As much as I surely doubt it, could there possibly be anything out there better than The World at War?

    The World at War

Well the World at War series is the winner IMHO. I have the original 26 episodes and have been searching for the 8 extras that they did shortly after the main series. Sooner or later they will be on a Torrent site somewhere.

    Regards,
    Stu

      Hi Stu,

I have the anniversary boxed-set with 11 volumes/DVD's. I haven't counted the exact number of episodes in it yet. Is that what you have? If there is more currently available that I don't currently have, I'm gonna have to really do what my smiley is doing right now... However, if I have all there is, and there's just more of a great thing ahead, I'm okay with that, and ready to spend the money on it too...

        Extra 6

        Hi Chris,

The original series was 26 episodes ending in #26 titled Remember. Shortly thereafter 8 more episodes were done with remaing footage. They are named as follows...

        1. Secretary to Hitler.
        2. Warrior
        3. Hitler's Germany - The People's Community (1933 - 1939)
        4. " " - Total War (1939 - 1945)
        5. The Two Deaths of Adolph Hitler
        6. The Final Solution: Part One
        7. " " " : Part Two
        8. From War to Peace

I know they came out in VHS and I am 99% sure they are in DVD and likely included in your box set.

        Cheers,
        Stu

              Stu,

From what you've listed, I'm happy to say that I have them all. I thought it was likely, since I do have the most-recently issued box set. I've also recently watched all of those, and they are essential bonus episodes, with great extra information. I highly recommend that everyone update their collection with those. You won't regret it.

              Thanks again,

              Chris

                Fallschirmjaeger,

I'll look for WWII in Europe. I hadn't even heard of that one. Thanks!

                Petr,

Thanks for the link to the Germany at War DVD's. Those look really good and very comprehensive too. It looks like I'm in for a lot more T.V. time than I thought. But, I don't mind. I sure don't want to miss out on anything.

Many thanks to both of you...

P.S. This thread has already yeilded much more great documentary recommendations than I expected. I wonder how many more good ones are left that I don't know about?

the episode WARRIOR is by far my fave.....the opening footage is rarely seen in other docs.......interestingly, Albert Speer died in london during the making of this series...his interviews being recorded a couple of days before his death!

Yes, anything with interviews from the actual people involved is hard to beat. That's exactly why I'd say that all the best stuff has already been made. The only thing that can make a new documentary even competitive is when it includes newly-discovered period footage with newly-found information. However, against all odds, I do remain vigilant and optimistic. Afterall, to paraphrase my signature qoute from myself , the "woodwork" does still yeild many surprises...

                            Hi karlo,

Did you mean Albert Speer died during the making of the "World at War"?

My understanding was the Speer died in 1981, whilst the World at War was completed around 1973/1974.

My personal favorite has always been "World At War", but having seen the first two installments of the new Ken Burns series "The War", which premieres on PBS on September 23rd, my opinion is that the best is coming in a couple of weeks....
