Yea, i forgot to mention i probably was the youngest one in the theatre by 20 years. I could tell, that some (2-3 people) were collectors but the vast majority were elderly people. I wanted to talk, but I just couldnt get my self up to do it. Even though, i did hear one of them say "everytime, i see a war movie. I get nightmares." I think sometimes unconciously due to our hobby (read: addiction for some), we glorify war, but we should remember the war for the people in it, not just the stuff they left behind.

    Just my 2 cents

i thought it was a very done movie, alot less combat scenes than i expected (watching the previews playing on TV made it seem like another S.P.R) it was still worth going to see (i watched it opening night) Ill definately get it on DVD when it comes out.

          Flags of our Fathers

          Guys:

This is a great thread. It's good to take a step back and remember the men who fought and died for us all....no matter what war.

Here's my Grandpa posing with his buddies. He's the one on the far right with his hand on his hip. The quality of the pic isn't that great...sorry.

Grandpa was one tough SOB. I remember seeing the scars on his back from German grenade fragments. He didn't talk much about the war, mainly that he was glad the damn thing was over and how much he missed his comrades.

Yeah, this ended up turning into a good rememberance thread. I wish I knew more about my relatives that fought in the major wars, if there are any. My grandparents were all to young to fight in WWII or WWI so, unfortunately, I don't have a grandpa with a basement full of militaria to show me.

By the way Larry, what unit was your Grandpa with?

              Flags of our Fathers.

He was in the 83rd and his name was Bill Fisher. He died when I was twelve so I never really got to ask him much about the war.

My other Grandpa, Cpl. Lawrence Foley, was in the 70th and is buried in Epinal, France. He was killed in combat, 19 Jan. '45. My Father was two when Grandpa Lawrence was killed. The good people of France are taking good care of his grave along with 5,000 of his comrades buried there. Our family is thankful for their efforts. If you've never visited a place like this, it will put a lump in your throat the size of a baseball.

My Great Uncle was in the 2nd, also combat infantry. He made it home and lives in IL. I attended one of his Army reunions and got to meet some of his friends. The honor was mine.

I saw the movie the other evening and I have to say It is one of the most powerful and thought provoking war movies I have ever seen. For those of you that saw it and missed it, see it again.
Do not leave before the ending credits.

I loved the movie. I like the fact that it not only showed the dynamic nature of the war(with great special effects), but it also showed the reality of the effects upon the participants once they returned home to resume their lives.

I think it would have been better if it did not jump back and forth so much.

Battle Of Iwo Jima/flag Raising Websites

Some websites i found today on the flag raising etc..,sorry a bit late, just found them today.

                    http://www.angelfire.com/ca/dickg/IWO.html
One about the first flag raising, info and pictures.

                    http://www.iwojima.com/raising/raisingc.htm
One about the members of the 2nd flag and more famous raising, info and pictures.

                    http://www.olive-drab.com/od_history...945iwojima.php
On ewith info on the battle etc..,like nearly 7,000 americans killed and most of the 22,000 japanese, the marines wining 27 medal of honours, more than any battle in u.s history.

                    http://www.iwo-jima.navy.mil/iwo59/flagraisers.htm
And this good site with info, pictures of the battle, flag raisers etc..good picture below with who is who in the 2nd flag raising.

Oh yea i liked the movie, still wish it had more action scene's in it,the ones they did have where great though, good acting overall too in the movie. The scene's in the caves i think where the most gory, japanese blowing themselves up with grenades, also stay till the credits finish as you will see lots of real pictures on the flag raisers and the battle too,and the final part from the mountain of the dog tags blowing in the wind and seeing the beacv in the background, looking like it was in WW2 sort of.

I actually found this thread after a search - rather than posting a new one for a review, as I wouldn't mind seeing this film. I was somewhat put off by recently seeing Windtalkers (which I thought was pap), but after reading the review I might just take a peep.

Those bringbacks - and especially your ol' fellers .45 is... amazing. That would never be allowed in the UK. More's the pity.

I haven't seen it yet but can anybody tell me about the haircuts please. Were they period for the guys as well as gals? They always get the gals hair correct but never ever get guys hair correct.

Would have to agree fully with Paul. Very good film!

By the way, does anyone know any good sources for information regarding the state of US finances during WW2? It was a topic raised in the film and I wanted to read up on it.

Finally got around to watching the film on DVD last night, and I have to say that in my opinion this really is an excellent film.

I have just read through all of the previous posts on this thread and many have said they wanted more action scenes well, I think that might have diluted the human element of the film of how it portrayed normal human beings caught up in the mealstom of battle and the situations they found themselves in.

For myself, it is the human element which makes the film so good to watch and also provides some very thought provoking issues.

                              Just my 2p.

                              Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

The book is a real lightweight..at least what I read. Hate how Bradly refers to the Marines as "boys"...they, in my opinion, were "men" once they graduated boot camp. Never finished it. Movie was ok, Letters is better.
