Read the book as part of my school literature curiculum and watched the movie many, many years ago. The main purpose of the book and movie was not to accurately portrait uniforms or weapons of the Wehrmacht but to show the futility of war and of course to show that the Nazis were bad and were to blame for everything bad that happened during the war. This was the way that East Germany was made to portrait Germany during WW2 in order to be permitted to exist under Soviet occupation. Might just bear this in mind before outright rubbishing anything made in or by East Germany in relation to pre-1945 German history. I know, nobody has been rubbishing it here, but I just want to make the point before anyone does .... Anyhow, I did not think it a bad book or movie. Cheers, Torsten.
