Hello,
The original All Quiet on the Western Front used a lot of real items. The film A Time to Love and a Time to Die also used many real items. In the film The Desert Fox, James Mason is actually wearing Rommel's tunic for the Normandy part of the film. Incidently, this tunic on loan from the family turned up missing after the filming was done.
Regards,
Jody

This is quite a remarkable film.
As you can imagine with myself being a citizen of the UK, i find many of the scenes in the film rather....disturbing.
Here are some captures...Attached Files

The above production dates from 1964.
Much praise has to be given for the German films of the 1950's some examples of which have been mentioned already on the thread.
A few grabs from the original "Stalingrad" made in 1958 show that the current trend of gritty realism to the look of combatants isn't a new invention, but a rediscovery..look how practical the troops look in these shots.
The grime, the stress, the desire to stay warm is in every frame.

I've read that the tradition of shooting at 6am on Sunday continues. Doctor Who did this numerous times in the 1960s, such as the Cybermen walking down the stairs near St. James Park (I think that's right). That I read was filmed really early one Sunday morning so as to avoid crowds. And 28 Days Later also was filmed in London early in the morning. (That's a trick they do in a lot of big cities. Early morning can easily pass for dusk and with the right lighting you'd never know if it was 5am or 12noon!)

The family wants it back too.
The "props" used in Decision are apparently still in a warehouse somewhere in Germany. They put ads in theppapers starting in 1951 for uniforms etrc. to make the film. Nobody turned in any SS uniforms.
