    The Bridge

The Bridge used original german uniforms. It received the academy award for best foreign film and is available on DVD. Given when it was made in the late 50's, it is one of the better anti-war films out there. This is a DVD screen shot of some new enlisted students defending the Bridge the moment they hear American tanks approaching. There is a mix of M36 and M40 tunics. You can even make out what looks like an M44 type shoulder board on tunic seen to the far left. There are some mobilization and retreat sequences in the film with hundreds of uniforms - clearly done when surplus german militaria was more cheap at the time.

      Another image.

Feldwebel watching the bridge. Notice the detail on the tunic down to the awards and collar tress. Quite remarkable.

The 1985 film "Come and See" also makes use of German original WW2 uniforms.

When THE LONGESTT DAY was made-I'm pretty sure I remember some of the uniforms worn by central German personalities(Curt Juergens, etc.)were actual uniforms worn by their actual personalities they portrayed...

Seem to remember 'where Eagles Dare' used genuine late war camouflage jackets?

Simon: the Sumpftarnung parkas used in the 'where Eagles Dare' movie was Englished manufactured reproductions.

HI Carl, these have been talked about a lot over the years. People have said they were rare prototype camo patterns etc, due to the pattern being rather odd.

                      Cheers, Ade.

Adrian: I know that people have concluded that they must be prototypes since they are not identical in pattern and miss one of the three basic colors of the sumpftarnung colors. But I have personally examen one of this parkas and button holes where not war-time and insulation material was totally wrong compared to other war-time parkas insulation material. The Sumpftarnung camo pattern is not identical to the pattern in this parka, which mean if its original war-time, the Germans made a unique pattern for this parka only. Which I dont think they did.
I know that Borsarello had it pictured in a soft cover book where it was suggested to be a rare variant. Later on in the work with Beaver, Borsarello came to the conclusion that it was manufactured in England for the movie. I have this from a third person and not directly from him, so I cant guarantee his word. But I can asure you from my examen of the parka that its no good.

They still wore the Gas Mask containers in '44 / '45?

Andrew Mollo's film It Happened Here used real gear and uniforms I believe too.

The movie Decision Before Dawn 1952 has many origional uniforms. Many scenes of black Panzer wrappers, tan/water/splinter parkas including a SS camo parka. Near the end is a scene of an officer wearing a nice Army crusher. Bill
