Everything is possible in scale.....but in 1/6 scale the regular Type VIIC "1941" conning tower will be huge!!!!!.....if you want the "double decker" connig tower with the extra AA weapons, even more....but any of those two will be quite an impresive model indeed...and with your amazing customs 1/6 figures even more.

I have a soft spot for U96 from Das boot and if you see my 1/6 collection gallery you will find Die Alter, so what I plan is the conning towe with part of the deck maybe just the section with the deck gun

My model will be the U-96, in fact had made long ago the brass plate you see in my model picture with all the real U-96 boat service information.....that was the first thing done in this project..many,many yeras ago!!!!!!!!!


MMMMMM.......with the section of the deck gun AND the gun itself you could be looking at almost six feet aprox. of a section of the u-boat in waterline configuration!!!!....in fact I belive that in the movie DAS BOOT one of the special FX models, they did an 1/6 or 1/8 scale conning tower, I saw a photo of it among the other movie scale models in an old CINEFEX magazine, which unfurtunately I don't have anymore.

Because of the size is probable that the conning tower itself have to be made of fiberglass(wood form/laminated) and the inside detailing like periscopes and other similar details of PVC/ABS tubing and styrene plastic and brass railings, the deck gun will be a project in itself and because of it's size all the details will have to be fabricate, is not a complicate form or detail but....there just a LOT of them

....WOW Jaime...that 1/6 scale conning tower looks great, a LOT of work and time went into that superb model!!

You are right about needing a little more weathering (in my very personal opinion and taste of course), but even without it it looks magnificent. I would have added the snorkel but I imagine that the builders also considered this to at some point, but rejected it because storage/display considerations, this is truly a BIG model/diorama...or maybe this is a still on progress proyect!!! Truly great craftmanship, that's why I love looking at the work of fellow scale modelers, their amazing work and dedication is an inspiration as well as a pleasure to look at.....no matter how big,dificult or rare a subject could be in a scale model, you can be sure someone did it or is working on it....and it is/ will be superb!!!

What kind of colors and tones did you use? Did you shade the dark lines before painting the boat grey or is it some kind of powder?

I mixed the colors used in the U-boat model, these are enamels, I am not a big fan of acrilycs paint and sometimes I only use them for figures or some particular weathering effects. There a LONG and diverse debate of what exactly where the color shades used in the U-Boat arm AND the apropiate weathering, even in B/W period photos of German subs dock side by side you can see a color diference that could go fron light to a quite dark shades of hull colors and extreame weathering. I based my colors in the "official" Kriegsmarine color codes (which also could be debatable for some modelers!!) and using the period B/W pictures and some of the few color ones of U-Boat as a guide for aproximate shades for the hull and weathering.

The weathering lines and streaks where made after the main darker lower hull color was applied, the lighter top grey color was applied next then a gradual color fading/blending began on the two colors simultaneusly in small areas. I usualy paint by airbrush and in my very personal opinion is one of the best ways to get a good used/faded/rusted finish because you can control the amount of paint and the exact location you want to cover with it.....but there are some truly gifted modelers that do amazing and spectacular paint jobs and weatherings by paint brush and spraycans, it just take a little more time and effort.

I do all my fading,paint chiping,streaks and overall painting with enamel paints and some artist pastel chalks, I don't use weathering pigments,filters or powders since they could be quite expensive and to be honest I am just an "old school" modeler which like the traditional style and so far I liked very much the end result. But these pigments,filters,powders are great and work wonderful, also they are much quicker to apply and blend, and the end result could be spectacular, is just my personal preference and style of building for not using them.
