The Winter War began 80 years ago today. Tiny Finland invaded by the USSR. Stalin much underestimated the Finns. They gave him a bloody nose. The world was shocked, the Finns them selves must have been a bit shocked as well. Talk about determined defenders. Tough men.

In North Norway, much is made of the Soviet 'liberation' of East Finnmark late 44. this year was the 75th anniversary of those events, but not a word is being said about the 80th anniversary of those same Soviet forces invading Finland 5 years previously.

I absolutely appreciate you posting the Polish items. Where were you back in September mate?

We're in the midst of the "Phoney War" period now so if you have any items that relate to dates and events 80 years ago as the war goes on please post them.

Bob, many thanks for kind words. War in Poland did not cease in september of 1939. Poland was fighting on as an underground army. The last regular army unit, led by major Henryk Dobrzański "Hubal", had been destroyed by German Army in april of 1940. He was actively fighting and waiting for allies from France and Great Britain. He has been killed in combat and treated as "trophy". His grave had been kept in secret and remains unknown. It is "phoney war" on Polish territory...
