Owen I was led to believe the weapons will be melted down to produce a cast steel stairway leading in to the cathedral so the former beaten enemies will be trodden under foot kind of thing.

      UUUUUUUmmmm.

If they are going to to that then the stairs should be made from the MG 42s lashed together.

Igor Konashenkov:"for the smelting of individual components (steps, etc.) erected on voluntary donations of the main temple of the Armed forces in honor of the victory in the great Patriotic war will be used only elements of captured weapons of the Wehrmacht, stored in the warehouses of the armed forces."
Journalists were shown for a beautiful picture of the weapons of the first category (warehouse). Symbolically, several boxes of trash of the fifth category will be melted down.

They should simply hold on to them, but since that decision is mostly political they very likely will be destroyed. And in 50 years they will be paying premiums to get such guns for their collections for their historical values.
Recently Russia bought 30 T34 tanks from Laos. They made 50,000 of them and many survived the war. They scrapped most of them after the war and now shop overseas to get some back.

That's what I was thinking. If anything, collectors are probably giddy because it makes the gun value go up for this publicity stunt.
