Europa has been in decline long before Merkel ever entered office. Alles der Ausländer Raus is not a new slogan. I grew up with it in the 70s-80-90s. Only now, people are put on watch lists and are investigating for any national pride as hate. It is also why German Veterans are held in a higher regard. Things will eventually boil over.

The sooner we exit the EU the better.

Anyway, back to the old chaps.

There is an assumption they have something to hide and so should be left alone by some members in this thread. They may be thrilled at the chance at last to give their opinion on the excesses committed by some soldiers in their old unit.

An investigation is just that. An investigation. No accusations, no threats just asking questions.

As I said, my gut feeling is for them to be left alone but even when I watch the Oskar Groening trial a large part of me thinks he should be left alone as he is so old but I do not have a right to voice an opinion either way as I am absolutely unconnected to him or Auschwitz.

But this thread is about a masacre of civilians. In my opinion, actions between armed forces is not comparable to the murder of women and children.
I have a huge interest in the Third Reich. I find many aspects interesting and have a desire to find more information and collect items from all areas of the history. The few times I have spoken to WW2 vetrans from different nations has been humbling.

This does not blind me to defending men who killed little kids.

Its just sad im sure these old men could not be very well to go to prison.
Even so if they did they should go proud and shame will be on Merkel and the government. Got to keep getting "SS Nazi" in the head lines to make the German people feel bad.

They didn't kill woman and children,it was the male members of the houses on either side of the track who were shot.

not judge without being very familiar with the case !

It seems though that there's still a good portion of resentment !

Not very helpful when talking about a United Europe !!

I do admire the American people, the attitude amongst

Indians who had been slaughtered, murdered, raped and massacred

and the 'White Conquerors' !

These people learned their lesson and they did understand

that the only way forward is to forgive and to look forward !

Yes, bringing up these horror stories about massacres all the time is definitely

counter productive with the risk of separating instead of uniting !

Personal belongings were "liberated" not taken....

My grandfather's older brother was captured in Africa and held captive in Texas were he (and several others) got repeatedly beaten up by drunken GI's until one time the beating was so severe he had to be hospitalized. He died few years after the war ended because of those injuries.

It's all relative, and History serves the purpose of smoothing the creases of contradiction that riddle war events of epic scale like WWII in order to present an acceptable and morally satisfactory version of the facts and labeling the good guys and the bad guys leaving no room for good guys doing bad things and vice versa.

Germany and its allies lost the war and this is the price to pay. Had they won, who knows what WWII History would sound today... French Resistance Fighters would be Terrorists and Criminals and so forth...
