Hemingway was a drunk and a bully given too much authority by his American commander. He was a war correspondent but was made the unofficial governor of a French village by OSS Colonel David Bruce because Hemingway spoke fluent French. Hemingway even removed his War correspondent patch from his uniform, interrogated German prisoners (and killed some of them), and went on scouting patrols looking for enemy positions.

Hardly equates though to the massacre of 89 French civilians in retaliation for the bombing of a German troop transport train. It is an illustration of the excesses committed by Americans during the war in Europe. No one will rescind his Nobel Prize however. There wont be an inquiry.

Not trying to be an asshole but why should such an event that happened 72 years ago matter now? Did these people who prosecute these 3 old men live through that massacre? I think the amount of SS that died during the war and prosecuted after is enough. These old men are going to die anyways.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought there is no statute of limitations for war crimes that involve murder...age of the perpetrator is irrelevant .

You are correct. The resolution was adopted in 1979 that the statue of limitations for prosecuting Nazi war crimes was removed allowing crimes involving murder that were committed during the Second World War to be prosecuted in West Germany. The United States and many other European countries do not have a statute of limitations for murder. Under new German laws as long as they are alive, be they 80, 90, or 100 years of age they can be tried as accessory or accomplice to murder.

I will translate Walter Hauck's 4 page narrative over the weekend and post it here. It is an insightful accounting by someone directly involved with Ascq.

Gentlemen,

yes I agree, we have to be very, very careful how to determine

'who is a war criminal' !

Any legal reference is not getting us anywhere since

legal sources should be considered to be a result of 'political correctness' !

We are/should be talking about the individual being confronted

with extreme challenges !!

We still find situations in our present commitments where the individual fails to

comply with rules about warfare (designed at HQs of whatever institution) !

I am talking about rape and murder done by 'UN Troops' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The attitude of Dutch Un troops caused 'mass murder' by the Serbs ...

what are you all talking about !!

Do not interfere in internal problems of other countries and do not invent reasons

to do so !

Against all possible intelligence reports these two decided to declare war

on Arab countries !

Kuweit had been always part of Irak !

The reason behind this is a change in war crimes law. Whereas the Allies tried senior officers and noncoms and generally on the whole did not go after junior enlisted the law has been modified so that anyone associated with a murder or war crime, be they machinists or mechanics or whatever can be tried as accessories to the fact. That is why guards and clerks are being charged with being accessories to 170K murders etc. They have run out of officers who were already tried in many cases and are now going after anyone they can.

Its the sad truth of the times we live in.
