Are these the same murders where Knittel cashiered his men for trying to strip the dead of their watches and valuables because he believed it would bring bad luck?

Edit: Perhaps I am confusing just how many were killed under Knittel's orders.

I think I found a postcard on the internet that shows the inside when it was inhabited.

Indeed, but the reporter clearly mixed up two cases: the murder of American pow's at the chateau on the 21st and the murder of civilians in Stavelot on the 19th.

C'mon guys, they're just old houses, all Europe was a battlefield, many killed people are still missing and are buried somewhere in the ground or trench etc..
How many ghosts would that give at night ?
If you like history or are curious, just enter the house and look around.., especially if you're a believer, but if you still take a look under the bed before sleeping, don't go in there..

              Jos.

I really like the insides of the houses.

You could just put a sofa in.........and a new Viking stove and set up shop.

Probably open up a cellar an d make a great war room.

                Not creepy at all.

I do not find it creepy what so ever by the way

I would like to visit simply for its historical context in the Battle of the Bulge.

The dead cant harm us, its the living we have to worry about !!!

                  All the best

Indeed, those murders too place in the woods approx. 300 meters behind the mansion and nobody was killed inside. What is "creepy" however is that most of the building was already demolished because it was dangerous and/or already collapsed. What remains is in very bad condition and I would certainly not put in a sofa and a stove and wait for the room to come down on me.

In Stavelot several houses and farms where people were massacred are still standing and people live in them. Could be considered "creepy" but life goes on.

Its just got a creepy feeling you have to be there in the woods strange country not a person in site.
Some people belive in ghost some don't, I do as im catholic believe Demons can attach themselves to places.
I was not scared of this as i walked in as you can see but my Wife did not want to come in or stay outside in the middle of nowhere on her own. which was not nice for here.
Like said it's the living that can hurt us you never no what strange people hanging around these places reminded my Wife of the Texas chainsaw place lol.

When i go back to the ardennes i will go here for sure leave her at the hotel next time

So who owns these abandoned houses? Are they on public or private property?

                            Truer words were never spoke.

I envy you for having been able to view these places. Had I known then as a youth....I would have been like Hänschen Klein with stock and hat.

If you do return please share more images with us and thank you for the ones you have shared.

IMHO the economical decline of the area is far more haunting than whatever ghost could lurk in the ruins of the old orphanage. Attempts to turn the tide by promoting tourism mostly failed as becomes clear from the partly built infratructure for a bungalow park between the bridge and the chateau which ran out of funds.

That house has good bones and I mean it still looks solid.....no pun intended.
