    Thank you for clarifying my point.

    It's a Nazi monument ... NOT Greek.

    So, if Germany feels this "monument" bares merit to the country, I'm sure they will step in.

    Also, I did collect WW2 German items once, but realised over 30 years the bottom line, ... and now viewing a certain "limited" number of collectors in this area, decided I have no connection with their twisted political bent, ...

    A shame, as the Third Reich awards are special, and worthy of proper investigation and scrutiny.
    BUT, the growth of ignorant "limited" sycophant collectors way out balances all basic moral standards, and to be associated with this small but poisonous idealist faction .... ruins the whole idea.

    There are many proper and decent collectors ... and good luck to them.

          wtf!Greeks spent thousands back in 2003 recovering a Ju52 in Leros,did things really changed so much all these years?Good job for the Ju52,ok,but saving the Fjr Mem is costless...

                  Interesting thread. The monument is a paradox to me. I am actually very surprised it has lasted for so long at all.
                  As one fascinated by Airborne warriors (whether that be Vietnamese & French paras at Dien Bien Phu, Israelis in the Six day war or Brits at Arnhem or in the Falklands) I sort of understand the strength of feeling for the paras that died in the battle - but ultimately they fought for the wrong side, the side as Churchill put it so well that stood for "monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime."
                  If we want to remember and reflect upon the tragic waste of young men of all countries that died and were deprived of a future then respects can be paid at the appropriate cemeteries it would seem. For the man (including sensible ones) in the street is it not nowadays simply a somewhat odd tribute to invaders, and Nazi ones at that? It was erected in 1941 after all, by the Germans/Nazi authorities. On the other hand can it easily be seen as simply a tribute by brave soldiers to their fallen brothers in arms? It sits uneasily somehow still.
                  I would be very interested to hear from Cretans themselves on this, and what their feelings towards it were straight after the war and since then (to now).

                    My view is it's now a part of history, and however unpleasant that period was the memorial should be retained, as in my opinion it now reflects all who suffered on Crete and the Greek islands. We don't go around destroying Roman sites because they were invaders, do we? so why should the FJ memorial be any different?.

                    In the last several years there does seem to have been a growing trend to both revise history, and remove all trace of the Nazi's.
