Can you tell us, is there any news with the threat of demolition facing this monument? I have heard for years that it is in imminent danger of being torn down. Does the original eagle still exist somewhere?
It hasent changed in recent years, there is a thread about it in the FJ-section.
The eagle fell of in a winterstorm in 2001, and most likely was torn to small pieces, as being made of weak plaster.
6 month later I managed to found some remains still in the side-hedgerows, all not bigger than a fist.

hit by a thunder in a storm in 2001 as Patrick said and torned down to pieces. Before that,a part of it was cut-at the beak area I think-by locals in their attempt to find English golden crowns(!) in it...There was a related myth spread about leaving Germans would hide gold and such...
What can I say except that I am ashamed?I Just keep telling them, other Greeks everywhere,go ahead, tear them all down, monuments,Monks by Turks, castles by Venetians, forts by Romans,EVERYTHING,and build something that really represents your complete and utter emptiness...

It's appalling to see monuments being in the state in which this one is in, a restoration is a start but education to those who have these
deeds on their name or who think this is okay would be an idea.
Sadly this monument is not an incident, many German monuments are desecrated or even destroyed.
For example, most monuments which once stood on German soil but is now considered poland are wiped off the
face of the Earth completely. I do lots of research for monuments and i often hit a wall because files can be missing but
the monument is no longer there at all, only a old photograph with some luck.
There are other reasons why many monuments are falling apart, vast amount of people, certainly the younger generations
are not interested in history and have no respect for what their grandfathers did for their country and the people or simply
want to forget it ever happened. Another reason is that the government isn't in general that eager to spend money on monuments,
certainly not WWII who stand there to show respect to the fallen German soldiers.
The reason why there are still quite some monuments standing until this day is because volunteers attend
the monuments and money is collected to save for restorations and the yearly Volkstrauertag.
