Time and again I wonder what you are doing on this forum. Do you actually collect Third Reich militaria? Surely the awards must mean something to you - knowing what the soldier may have gone through to be awarded a decoration or badge? This is nothing about celebrating Nazis, it is about honouring young men who fought and died for their country - they just happened to be on the losing side. I normally stay out of these discussions (as I learned my lessons years ago), but I think Gary makes a valid point that perhaps Germany should pay for the memorial - or do nothing and let time take its toll.
There are the ruins of memorials all over the region for past battles and while perhaps some modern era collectors may feel this particular battle was worthy of such a memorial I guess I need to ask WHY? It was a rather minor battle in the grand scheme of things for both sides. Yes, some 17,000 British and Commonwealth troops were captured while another 7,000 were killed or wounded but that pales to other battles in the conflict. Apart from the paratrooper angle I don't see why this is even such a big deal?
As for other memorials I don't see many calls for the Greeks to restore the Augustus' Victory Monument in honor of the Battle of Actium. That victory WAS a huge deal that lead to the founding of the Roman Empire! There WAS a huge memorial that lasted a few centuries but eventually fell into disrepair and is a ruin today.
Greece, Italy, Turkey are filled with ruins that span the centuries. I just don't understand why a handful of people show such passion for a memorial that is so controversial.
There are plenty of war memorials for the First and Second World Wars but usually it is the nation's involved that pay for their upkeep... so Gary's point that Germany should pay has merit.Comment

there is a german association and a site about this memorial and how they want to save it.
They also collect funds for the preservation....so support them and post here how much you have given to save this so important monument. Based on some comments here in this thread, I do not have any doubt that there will be generosity....
