I agree, all veterans, no matter which side, should have the chance to honor/commemorate their fallen partners, family, etc.
It has been an issue here in the Netherlands too as German officials have put in the request to have National memorialday here (4th of may) together.
But there are veterans and survivors who oppose it, as long as they are alive and have a problem with this idea, the Dutch government refuses and respects their feelings.
Maybe in the future it can be a joined memorial, for all fallen soldiers/warvictims and to learn from the past.
Btw, This years memorial was yet again disturbed by various youths :-s
Flowers and wreaths put by monuments were destroyed and thrown into the canals
A memorialstatue has been covered with spraypainted swastikas
Some youths thought it was funny to put up various posters on shopwindows with slogans glorifying the Waffen SS etc.
During the 2 minutes of silence (where I live) youths thought it was necessary to drive by in their cars yelling things and honking the horn.
Appearantly for some people it is very hard to show some respect once a year...is 2 minutes too much to ask?
