From the write up on Gottlieb above:

"Gottlieb is one of the largest-volume military artifacts dealers in the United States, and is known worldwide for uncovering key pieces of history including recently, Adolf Hitler's uniform. Earlier this year, Gottlieb uncovered a FAKE passport believed to have been used by Auschwitz "Angel of Death" Josef Mengele to flee justice."

Not to be-labor a point BUT; What became of "self authenticating" here??
The emphasis in the above quote is mine.

Charming! Who keeps changing the Nat.Geo. page and why?
The blue part of your last post gives this whole debakel a smell of necromancy.

Playing the devil's advocate here, but any person who collects "Nazi" items have their hands all over these intrusions.....If people didn't collect these items, there would be no demand.....So with demand here, people like CG are simply filling a need.....Albeit in a way which has obviously upset quite a number of people...

Now people say they wouldn't want something dug up from a grave.....Why?...Because morally it's a person's resting place.....But when did it become his resting place?....The moment he died there or the moment he was buried there?.....People have items in their collections that they have no idea whatsoever the circumstances surrounding the way they were obtained.....Were they taken off dead German soldiers following battle?....IF so, is that not basically the same as having said item(s) removed from the ground?.....Has not a resting spot been violated?.....Yet, we don't think badly of the person(s) who took part in such activities.....

If we are talking about human remains being disturbed, than again is this something that has happened only recently and to fill a market's demand?....No, unfortunately it is not.....Don't forget Allied troops removed the teeth from dead Japanese soldiers.....War is ugly, no question....CG has obviously struck a nerve in the collecting community, but if it wasn't him somebody else would certainly be doing the same things.....Bodes

I agree. Of course the whole point is not what's happening but who's doing it.

On a somewhat related note and maybe in contrast, has anyone heard anything about this program, which is going to be on the Smithsonian Channel tomorrow?

I understand that, but again playing the other side believe it goes even deeper than that......Seeing something ugly in CG causes others to see something in themselves that they don't like.....Bodes

I'm not defending anyone, but I sure most on this thread don't live in Glass Houses.

I will say this: 99% of what we collect belongs to people who are now deceased. The circumstances of our aquisition, in many cases, are what seperate us from, welll, self-authenticating necromancers.

Interesting, but I think the difference here is that those Allied troops were directly connected and part of that history... whatever they did right or wrong at that moment to their enemy is not a consideration here because they are "players" in that "historical" play. Now, in the case with CG and company, 75 years removed from that history, they are scrounging around for items to sell. They are only profiteers... digging up graves for their own monetary benefit... no other reason really. If there were no money in it, they would not be doing it. I think in the light, it is quite different.
