Looking for El Alamein veterans to interview

    Hi all

I have finaly finnished my book about the war on the French Riviera in 1944, after working on it for about 9 years and intervieweing hundreds of witnesses of the time.
I am now...... a bit bored, and so looking for a new similar project to work on before all our veterans pass on. It is not very well defined yet, but I would like to interview veterans of the war in North Africa, who were there before or during the El Alamein battle (but not after), and involved in land warfare, preferably infantry, armoured, engineers, and those involved directly at the front lines.
The veterans can be from any of the involved countries (All Commonwealth, German, Italian, French, etc), as long as they can communicate in either English, French or German; and as long as they have a good enaugh memory to be able to tell a few interesting stories. From experience I know anybody who was wounded or captured will remember those moments very well, so will make a good interviewee.
What I will do is conduct telephone interviews with these veterans, then use they stories in my future, yet ill defined, book.

So if any of you know any Alamein era veterans in Australia, the UK, south Africa, Germany, France, etc, I would be happy to be put in touch with them.

I am refreshing this thread again, as I am still searching for veterans to interview.
I have only interviewed two so far, both over 90, but both with excellent memories, so have faith that many similar healthy veterans can still be located in the former Commonwealth and Axis countires.

        Hi JL,

Sorry, can't help you with you search, but I am curious about your Riviera book. What is the title of the book and is it for sale already?

        Cheers
        Erwin

The Riviera book is called "Autopsy of a battle, the liberation of the French Riviera". It is for sale already on amazon, etc, but its planned publication date is november 28th. It may be a bit late on schedule however, I am not sure.
It will also be availlable in French, though probably only in the first half of 2014.
Here is a small "advertising blog" I made for the book: http://autopsyofabattle.blogspot.com/

I have managed to interview seven veterans so far, and have a few more in sight. All but one had very good to excellent memories, and seemed to be about 30 years younger then their actual age.
I was thinking of aborting this Alamein/North Africa project, but these first successfull interviews have confirmed that it is do-able.

I have managed to get quite a few contacts in NZ, a couple in the UK and Australia but none in South Africa so far.
Any additional veteran contacts would be welcome, particularly for South Africans!

Probably the Pflege-Alterheim (assisted living) would be your best bet.
