The Hitler Family Grave Levelled today.

Unbelievably the village of Leonding has been forced to level the grave.
Removing the headstone, probably destroying it for the sake of one stinking individual who opposes the private site.
I say unbelievable, but its not really...remember Sepp Dietrich, R.Hess etc.
That country wont be happy until they all talk another language.

the buddhas of bamiyan were nearly destroyed, but flak towers are too big to raise to the ground. perhaps the country owning such 'monuments' as these gravestones isnt always the best guardian of its history for future education. their wound and ill ease too fresh to allow such preservation. for some a blessing, a right; for others, further examples of its short sightedness and ill-served violence towards the relics of history, which should belong to all people in future days, not on a white collar worker's 'to undo' list. such is life.

You are right, it is not up to Austria to do this, they have no right to do so because it is of International historical importance.

I was speaking with a German family while visiting the Bavarian area about their graveyards and I was told that if a grave is unattended for so many years, no flowers, etc, they will exhume the bodies, cremate them, and recycle the plot. I think the stones are recycled too if they are thick enough to be engraved again.
I am not sure if this is what happened in this case or not.

I managed to visit this one whilst in Berchtesgaden. It looks like it is visited and tended to regularly as there was a candle burning on it evry time i visited it so it might survive. For how long though?

"The grave of Adolf Hitler's parents has been dismantled because it had become a memorial site for neo-Nazis, a parish priest in the Austrian town of Leonding said on Thursday, citing a statement by a relative of the dictator"

That pretty much explains it to me.

I did not know that although I only live 10 minutes away from the Leonding
                    graveyard...
Not a single word in the newspapers about this matter.
                    Interresting !

                    Regards

Out of personal experience i know how it feels when a familymember's grave if getting removed, in my case, without getting notified about the whole ordeal.

I was just a couple months to late when i visited the spot what was once a grave. Aside from the sadness, the feeling of frustration and being powerless got hold of me.

I just think it is sad that another piece of history is lost.

No political comments here, but whether people like it or not, Hitler existed, was an exceptional speaker and probably one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Do the authorities really think that removing this gravestone to his parents will stop people ? They tried in the 20`s and early 30`s to ban the NSDAP by various means, did it work? The only way to come to terms with the past is to face up to it, learn from it and not brush it under the carpet hoping it will go away. We as a species seem to learn little from the past. Hitler happened and was a product of his time, just as Napoleon, The British Empire and slavery were. No one is saying it is right.

For me, I am just sad that another slice of euorpean history has gone forever. Just wished I`d visited the site in 2008 when I was last over there.

Still, Wolfsschanze is still there and next on my list

The stupid thing is that now even more Neo Nazis will visit and their hatred and determination will be greatly increased as well. The powers that be will never learn. Even Stalin knew not to take Lenin's body away.

The erasing of History is in progress.

                              Who's next ?!

Bernhard, could you post some pix of the renewed grave when time permits ?

                              Kind regards.
