Thank you , it is sad that the current government in Germany shows no interest in WW 1 dead .

Very interesting article - thanks for sharing, and yes it is sad that Germany does not recognize anything like this.

Battles are never the end of war for the dead must be buried and the cost of the conflict must be paid.—James A. Garfield.

I wonder if they will destroy the site for the road after the site is excavated?

Wow, amazing article. It would be something to see the bunker and it's contents.

            Fascinating stuff,

Interesting article and thanks for putting the link up

I found this quote quite ironic:

"In Germany, it's a very different story. The find has only made the inside pages of a handful of newspapers. In the nation's memory, the war is eclipsed by World War II, the Holocaust and the collective guilt that weighs on Germany to this day. Both conflicts have imbued Germany with a deep streak of pacifism"

I tell you what, most germans I have met are actually very aggressive when it comes to talking about WW1 and WW2.

Once a German backpacker came to my house and when they saw I had a book on the Luftwaffe they went nuts over it and wanted it gone!

mind you, they were still keen to use my house and shower etc

I should have shown them the "dont talk about the war" sketch off Fawlty Towers...

Yes, they will, because there are virtualy an infinity of sites like this all over north eastern France.

Sounds like guilt rather than aggression. I think that was the point of the quote you highlighted. There is no more sabre rattling.

                      Nice story
Its a shame they can't leave those boys where they fought and died together with a memorial. Who cares about a road. But I understand its difficult if not almost impossible in France.

                        True words indeed

The days of German armies threatening the world appear to be well and truly over.

Good enough to fight and die for their country but not good enough to be shown dignity in death. War is a terrible event, but these men didn`t start the war and no doubt yearned for home. They should be honoured, end of!!

The Germqn War Graves Commission (Volksbund) is a privately funded organisation, not a government organisation. That alone says A LOT about how the German governement thinks of its war dead.
