Monastery & Round Tower : Glendalough, Co.Wicklow, Ireland

Here are the ruins of a 7th Century Christian monastic settlement site in Glendalough, Co.Wicklow, Ireland . The monastary itself would have been constructed around 12th Century.

As a result of the settlement and monastary been founded there it became a target for enemies. The enemies at that time were of course the Vikings. They would carry off plunder and slaves.

To counter this then the round towers were built as a place of refuge. Round towers are medieval stone structures. Generally they are found near churches or monasteries.

You can see from this photo that the entrance was 2 metres of the ground. A ladder was used to climb in when being attacked. The ladder would then been pulled up into the tower also so that attackers could not follow. If the attackers had a ladder of there own and climbed up it would have been easier for the person inside to fight off or defend his little entrance.

what a wonderful old place, thanks for sharing this, no doubt you can feel the ages there.

I really like the look of the tilted tombstones, they've been there for centuries haven't they..

Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful pics of such an old culturally significant place!!

The tower is quite remarkable and in great condition - the whole complex must have looked quite impressive.

                    Sláinte,

Been there many times myself and I can tell you for sure that this place has magic everywhere.
The cemetery is really terrific and the lake has such a blackened waters that it scares to death.
                    Many thanks for the pictures!

A really beautyfull place. It looks perfect for a movie setting before a McDonalds gets built in the background.

Beautifully preserved place with awsome history. Most likely a lot of artifacts or maybe treasures are hidden in the ground.
