Here are the ruins of a 7th Century Christian monastic settlement site in Glendalough, Co.Wicklow, Ireland . The monastary itself would have been constructed around 12th Century.
As a result of the settlement and monastary been founded there it became a target for enemies. The enemies at that time were of course the Vikings. They would carry off plunder and slaves.
To counter this then the round towers were built as a place of refuge. Round towers are medieval stone structures. Generally they are found near churches or monasteries.
