It's amazing what's still out there.
I remember visiting the area 4 years ago and didn't believe in stories of still easily finding ammo lying around until I urgently ventured into the wood for a pee...just beneath me and undisturbed laid a live shell...needles to say I went back over my steps in panic!
Many thanks for taking the time to post your experience...it brings me neat and nice memories...

Very Nice Don, Thank you for sharing the pictures of your trip.

It's remarkable how much remains of this site, especially with the rapid and constant change we face everywhere and with everything.

I look forward to your posting additional pics.

                Best Regards, fischer

Fort Vaux. Fort Vaux was hotly contested and held out against numerous German attacks, even after it was isolated. At night the defenders would signal Fort Souville and give reports. The Germans finally gained access to Fort Vaux and the fighting was in the corrdors. Imagine assualting down a 4meter wide corridor with machineguns blazing and grenades going off. Everytime a barricade was taken another was waiting farther down the all. The place was filled with the dead and the dieing. The scars on this fort are more pronounced than Douaumont. Unfortunately we were too early to go inside so I just have a few shots.

After Vaux fell the Germans advanced on Fort Souville. If they could take it then they could observe Verdun directly and their artillery would seal its fate. After hard fighting it was not to be. This monument marks the farthest limit of their advance.

After this point the Germans were on the receiving end of French attacks and slowly gave up the land that they had captured at such a terrible price. I'll wrap this up tomorrow night.
