Lots of artillery and for good reason. Remember the 40,000,000 shells.

The museum displays are around this diarama which is a good depiction of what the battlefield looked like during the battle.

The main protaganists, the lowly soldier. The grand strategies of generals counted for little here. The shell, bullet and grenades decided the issue.

                Fantastic thread Don...

I must admit, I have been there often, mostly with a camera... but I have always forgotten to actually take any photos... it is great to have the trip documented in this way!!!!

Indeed they do... but you saw how "J" was... would not get more than a shrug if he drove over one ;-)

Some have been driven over many times, and noone gets around to moving them.

A great lesson of the Big War, although I focus on WW2 I must visit this place for sure, next time I am near Paris.

                      Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the correction Chris. I remember both stories now. Now back to our story.

Fighting towards Ft Vaux and Souville was bogged down so the Germans decided to launch a series of attacks along the other bank of the Meuse. They attacked from Malancourt (10) towards (8) le Mort Homme (the Dead Man) and (9) Cote 304 (Hill 304. The fighting here was just as intense as on the other side of the river. Both hills were bombarded into lunar landscapes. The Germans set up an OP in the ruins of a church at (11) Montfaucon to assist in the accuracy of their guns.

We parked the car (X marks the spot) and walked up the Dead Man.
