Armoured tree observation post, as used from 1916.
An actual tree would be replicated by camoflage personnel in workshops and then replaced in a single night with the dummy. Such trees were mainly used for artillery spotting but it was rare for a suitable tree to be in an area where such observation was needed.Attached Files

This is a pic of My Dad checking out one of the 12 sided bronze culverin bastard cannon from Henry the V111s flag ship the Mary Rose, which sank 19 July 1545. Makers marks on the trunnion indicate that the cannon was made by Henry Johnson a gun trader and official surveyor of ordinance.
I have a few more pics from this amazing museum that I will load up laterAttached Files

I've been to the IWM many times and they have many great items and displays - but I can tell you that they haven't changed for years! It's a pity as I was told by a staff member there once that they only have room to display around 10% of their material (I refer to uniforms etc here, not tanks and aircraft!). Much of it has NEVER been on display and is still packed in wooden crates exactly as they were when they were sent to the museum in 1945 (ref the WW2 stuff). As I understand it they have mountains of Luftwaffe uniforms that have never seen the light of day - what a pity! I also heard some disturbing stories that some of it had found it's way out of the museum through the hands of dishonest staff over the years. I can't condone that, but it's also a pity if the stuff rots in cases and is never seen or looked after lovingly by collectors....
Some years ago I arranged to view some of their Waffen SS items (a free service at the time, not sure if they still do it - but enquire if you are interested!) and was allowed to handle 3 or 4 SS tunics and other items that to my knowledge had never been on display. I think there's a lot of stuff out there, still tucked away in 'nook and crannies' like this - that has never been seen by collectors.
