Hi all ,

As someone who does reenact , I think the fat reenactor subject shall never be lame or not funny , it is in fact deeply funny .

Big fat guys in uniform just crack me up .

i think this reenacing "omg im wearing an SS uniform!!im so pro!!!" thing is getting out of hand, but ill guess this goes with the hobby..

The first one is downright embarrassing, or it should be. Some may think the fat reenactor thing is funny, but after seeing this link you may even question that.

The second, man oh man, very impressive indeed.

Essentially I am at a loss as to the reason why there are so many sub-standard impressions that are portrayed. It is not rocket science, it just takes effort and discipline to research and then employ that within your impression. Do the basics well and the rest "should" come naturally.

Attitude is everything.

Bauer, I agree. When I started in the 80s a reenactor either had to wear a converted Swedish uniform, a Janke ($$$) or an original. Most went with the Swedish but a few others wore Janke or an original. I can recall seeing some beautiful original uniforms being bought, stripped of their original insignia, a reproduction SS insignia applied then worn in the field.
Y-straps were made from Austrian post-war Y-straps, belts were made using original hardware taken from old original belts that were unserviceable for reenacting. A lot of Bundeswehr equipment was used, some made by people with leather-working talent, some surplus from other countries items were used.
Reenactors combed the militaria shows for canteens, messkits, helmets, etc. So, with everything being made reproduction anymore, why is it so difficult to put a decent kit together? One stop at At The Front and you can buy everything you need to pass muster with the exception of a weapon. If At The Front is out of something, he has a vendors section where you can surely find the item.
I can guarantee you that if I didn't have one item toward a kit, within a week I could have everything needed to correctly do a WW2 German or American impression sitting in my living room and all without traveling out of my house.
Of course at nearly 57 I would look as bad as one of those fat reenactors, hobbling around holding my aching back.

To me, A reencacting group needs to be " A UNIT" ....all the same equipment, same weapons optional, but for sure the same boots, pants, tunic, webbing gas mask container , mess kit, helmets etc. To me THATS what makes a Reenacting group look the part...& NO FATTIES...well that excludes me!.

Well, that depends on what you are re-enacting.
For early war i would sort of agree.
But for late war... hell no

Have to say I disagree. We adopt (within reason) as far a uniform approach to our portrayal as possible, i.e. feldgrau uniforms, no camoflage. Our mantra is "what was the norm?". Clearly you can always find a photo that illustrates the exception, but I firmly believe a uniform, consistent look will invariably triumph over a mish mash of shades of camo. If you wear camo, be consistent as a unit. And yes, to be un PC, fat is out, and old.

Exactly! is what i'm getting at. To me nothing is more impressive than 25-35 renactors that look like they drew uniforms, equipment, gear & weapons from the same supply depo... that can fire & maneuver on a position or defend a position as if they were actually trained to do so. Even though a reenactor unit dresses properly but with a whole gammet of different grab no matter how realistic...looks a bunch of folks with deep pockets bringing what ever they want to the fight. Even US GI reenactors look better when they all look the same. Not like a bunch of SOFs ....& NO FATTIES!!!!! old can work for German(everybody defended the fatherland) but not for allied...unles your a general!

The uniform look portays the juggernaut unstoppable german war machine, you shoot one & theres 100s more that look like the same professional you laid low to take his place.

I agree on the camo part, we do that as a unit.. but then mostly just zeltbahns.
What i meant was that we got differend types of uniforms.. mostly M43 but a few M40 and M42´s.
We also got mostly M43 fieldcaps, but a few guys got overseas caps.
Equipment also differs a bit, depending on a lot of things.

This is the most realistic thing for the unit we portrait.
Its a unit that got (re)build in early 1944 from the remains of a Gren. Division.
Later on they got replacements from differend units, including allot of Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe guys.
So being 100% the same (everyone the same uniform model etc.) is not good.

Great, thats how it supposed to be.

Now lets look at a SS unit..most of them have chickenwirehelmets and of course everyone have at least ek2...how to you look at it?

Well... there's the stories of Germans wearing womens fur coats sent out to supplement the summer uniforms on the Eastern Front.
Mind you, it might be difficult to get matching fur coats for the whole unit !
