        Yep

        Yeah ... a "safe" airburst at 50ft with a 500lb bomb .. that would be a first.

Yeah! I am glad that I am not the only sane one here. I had to re-read the thread just to be sure I read it correctly. I have a few friends on base around me too and they are about wetting themselves on the floor right now.

Again, I sincerely needed the laugh this morning so please do not take my responses as personal attacks.

            Jokes

Well it must be a real rush to be on a Bomb Disposal Crew. I think it would require more focus than Brain Surgery. One slip for a Surgeon and the Patient dies, one slip for a Bomb Crew or just bad luck and no Tacos for Lunch. Oh, and no Open Casket Funeral either.

Wasn't talking about in the middle of a crowd, thought that would go without saying.
50 ft in the air, nothing around but ground, the crane would likely not even be damaged, the air & ground would take whatever explosive impact it had.

No where in my post did I say "safe", so I have no idea why you are quoting the word.
Quotations are for something that has already been said, so I'm left to assume its a cheap embellishment on your part.

                    Ok

So why do you think this method is not employed by ANY de-miners world wide ?

How do you know what type of detonator is aboard ?? .. Trembler ? Motion ? failed time fuse ?

How are you going to transport a 65 year + unstable 500lb bomb to a deserted area ?

Who would be foolish enough to transport it ?

Who would be foolish enough to hoist it ?

Ok .. you explode 500lbs of explosive in it's case 50ft in the air ...

....Your multiplying by at least 10 the area of detonation coverage.

The crane would be obliterated ... period !

                    Dangerous ... even in a desert .. from inside a bunker !

                    Nuff Said !

Uh.. is your Forum name Unknown Soldier because your "Hang the Bomb from the Crane" method will result in an Unknown Soldiers type of Burial?

Maybe best to contain and direct that blast. Just a thought.

Yes! Leave it in the 20 ft hole it was found in, place some det material around the thing to it and "let 'er rip". Much better off with a controlled blast, which will throw debris straight up in the air, with the ground absorbing most of it than a freak'n airburst which will throw a 360 shrapnel filled shockwave everywhere.

UnknownSoldier, let the professionals handle this one! LOL I am still seeing the "Three Stooges" scenerio involving a 500lb bomb and a crane! It would make a great episode. I seriously cannot stop laughing!

My condolences to the families of those who perished. A hard job in which every day is potentially your last. May they RIP.

Of course, there's is the advantage that you'll never know something went wrong.

Sorry guys, I´m not able to get the deeper meaning of your humor here. Maybe a language question

However............ I´m a crim. detective in the town where this accident happened and was involved in the investigations.

The dead bomb squad members were very professional officers with hundreds of safe bomb disablement over the last 30 years. I had known 2 of them sligthly.

Dono what went wrong, but 3 had not even a chance to say "ops". Their bodies broke into hundreds of more or less big pieces and we had to pick them up in a 150 yard area around the center of the explosion. Everybody who ever had to do this, will agree, that this is not the perfect work to droll over.

2 other officer which were not that close, got several metal parts of the bomb into the body. Seriously wounded, but at present out of life danger. One part of the bomb metal smashed into a roof..........500! yeards away.

As you can see, for me all is real and not just a thread for someone unknown. For me there´s no place for sarcastic jokes or word games here; sorry!

These guys (and all bomb squads around the world) should get all respect; they gave their lifes for our safety. And they will do in future.
