I take it that explosive ordinance personnel were the ones killed. Tough job.

Probably not government workers. I think they were part of a private EOD disposal firm. I just read this differs from state to state, some have a private bomb disposal service, others use civil defense, police or firefighters. Often times these kinds of removals are done by private firms, not the police.

I read an interview with the leading German bomb disposal expert on Spiegel Online a while back in which he explained the problems with those acid fuses, they´re really nasty stuff and getting more and more unstable. Soon the bombs left over from WW II will start going off by themselves. IIRC he said that in Berlin alone there are probably still 2000 or more hidden underground...

        Possible?

Well is it possible that we can get numbers off the bomb fragments, figure out who dropped it and prosecute them for War Crimes before it's too late?

These 3 men were Government workers of Zentrale Polizeidirektion (ZPD) Hannover (Niedersachsen), Dezernat 55, Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst (KBD)

Here some pictures of the guys two days before in Goettingen after they finished work with the first bomb............

                  May they rest in peace!

What a shame, munitions are a curse & hazzard from the day they are built, but a reality to be dealt with.
You would think a method would be developed where they can be destoyed in place without having the need for much handling ,,, Or maybe grab them with a magnet crane, and destroy it 50 ft in the air.

If it was meant as a joke, it was not a good one! This reply was just one thing IMO, most disrespectful and stupid.

Bomb squads around the world have to make a tough job, 3 members of such squads lost life doing their duty.

                          Peace on Earth

Munitions go on killing years after the end of hostilities, hence some want to ban the use of landmines.

I see the comment made by Dr Strangelove as an anti-war message presented in a biting "in-your-face" manner.

Amen to that. A 500 kg. bomb was discovered during some waterline work just about 2 km from where I currently reside the other day: 9000 local inhabitants were evacuated, many to a large local school, while the bomb was defused in situ as it was too dangerous to move... very hazardous work as the fuzes and explosives deteriorate over time. Even worse is that, at least in Berlin, there is also the risk of running into Soviet ordnance, which I understand poses even greater challenges, as many aerial bombs were converted artillery munitions with non-standardized fuzes...
