A trip to RAF Cosford Aerospace Museum.

Hi Guys, this Thursday I had a day off work. Rather than waste the day being lazy, we thought that we would have a day out. Having never been to the RAF Museum at Cosford, we thought that we would have a run over there, as it is not too far to go, being only just over a hours drive.

The museum has three hangers full of aircraft, plus a fair number out of doors, mainly civil airliners, but also a good selection of early RAF jets dating from the 1950's/early 60's, including a newly repainted "Vulcan" V Bomber, Hawker Hunter, Victor, and a Javelin. There are plans to build a new hanger to house these

There is also a new visitor centre which houses the very good shop, which has a great selection of books, models and videos/DVD's. I picked up a video on the Short Sunderland Flying boat. Plus there is a cafe/restaurant.

    Admission is free!

The Museum is set on RAF property just outside the confines of the active base.

Here is link to the Museum website:

We were very impressed by all the friendly staff we met. The security staff were happy to let me over the barriers to get a closer veiw of many of the exhibits.

I can highly recommend this museum!

    Cheers, Ade.

    Locheed SP-2 Neptune

The P-2H Neptune is a land based maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. It was designed during WWII and is powered by two piston engines and two jet pods to assist in take-off and for extra power when required to reach submarine contacts. Its first flight was on 15 May 1945 and squadron delivery was in March 1947. More than 1100 were built and no other post war maritime patrol aircraft has been built in such large numbers.

Bought by several armed forces, the Neptune served with the Royal Air Force in six squadrons of Coastal Command and on one flight (No.1453 Flight) for Airborne Early Warning Trials during the period 1952 to 1957.

Neptune 204 is on loan from the Helders Marine museum on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Navy

      Mk.III Hythe Gun camera

WW1 gun camera designed to look like a Lewis Gun. There is a good display of Military photography from WW1 to the present day.

        WW2 German range finder.

This item is very large being about 6 foot long. Taken from the French coast and able to see across the Channel. It was complete with spares box and was in very good condition.

The quality of the leather items struck me while viewing this display. The quality of the leather was amazing for something 80 odd years old.

            WW2 pilot display

This shows the "Irving" sheepskin flying jacket and trousers. The helmet is the now rare and hard to find, and expensive, "B Type". These have zipped ear cups for the headphones and are the pattern of helmet worn during the Battle of Britain.

                1960's RAF pilot

Features a survival type over smock. Not really my era so I can't add much detail about it, sorry.

                  RFC Sgt

Here is another WW1 Royal Flying Corps display. This features one of my favorite WW1 British uniforms, the "Maternity jacket". Rare stuff now and faked nowadays.

Close up on the "Wings". These struck me as being very flat compared to later 1930/1940's era RAF wings.

I was stunned to see this display of WW2 German rockets! This must be one of the best collection on display anywhere!
Note the V2 on launch trailer.
